Selling to the UK

Postby Lamont » Sat 01 Aug, 2020 3:33 pm

Anyone done it successfully?
Just sold an item to the UK and now I don't know how to accept payment.
Normally on here you direct payment into a persons bank account using the BSB and account number and send the item when the money arrives.
Do they have BSBs?
Paypal- does that cost me or them extra?
Thanks for any help.

Banks charge a fee for a payment in international currency or a payment in Aussie Dollars ( Name on account, Account number, Bank name needed)
There's a international payment tab on my banks website.

PayPal charges the seller a percentage( you send a invoice, they pay for the item, you send the item)

eBay charges the seller a percentage

International postage + packaging is another money grabber.(fast or slow postage... depending on which country it's going to or from there could be delays because of covid).

You have factor those fees into you asking price.
Mountain views are good for my soul...& getting to them is good for my waistline !

Thanks Offy. Looks like Paypal is my best option. My bank wont take international money anymore- just checked. Will lose 7% in total with Paypal. Should have added to the price as you said. Oh well. Just a one-off.

Be very cautious about accepting payment via Paypal, particularly if the buyer is overseas - IE out of reach.

Abusing, and lying to, Paypals so called "buyer protection plan" is used by some to obtain stuff for free, at the expense of the seller.

I second Moondog. Transferwise is definitely the way to go (https://transferwise.com/). I use it for purchasing gear from the US and Europe. It's cheaper than an international bank transfer, and very fast, but most importantly it provides really good exchange rates. Services like Paypal screw you on the exchange rate, which ends up costing you much more than the fee.

Thanks everyone. Have to look at Transferwise but seems like I have to get the other person to sign up etc. The whole process looks to be a right pain for one sale. Oh well.

Well a bit of feedback- went the PP route because it seemed easiest and a one off and I'm pretty gormless when it comes to such things.
Sent 'request'money and instantly answered and money sent. Lost about 6-7% as stated. But reasonably painless.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
I think were I to do this on a regular basis, which I'm not, I would look at setting up TFW.
