Doctors are the IT Help Desk of Human Biology

Postby Son of a Beach » Tue 29 Aug, 2023 11:56 am

Going to the doctor is a lot like submitting a service request to the IT help desk. Even before you see the doctor, you know what disorder they are going to suspect initially and you know that it is not the actual problem and you also know that they will not consider anything else during the initial consultation. The only way to get them to consider any alternative cause for the problem is to go through the motions of testing and treating that initial incorrect diagnosis.

Only when that pointless treatment and analysis has completely failed will they even consider the possibility that there may be another cause for the problem. It is only at this point, and after a lot of wasted time (and money), that investigation into the real cause of the issue will begin.

Just like with the IT help desk.

(My humble apologies to any doctors and IT professionals who read this. My father is a retired doctor and I was an IT professional for 20 years, so I also know what it's like from the other side and I understand why things are done that way. But it's still very frustrating.)

Not much of a story... at least not yet.

The second visit to the doc will be next week, when I get to tell him that the current 4-week course of treatment has had no effect. So hopefully we will start looking into other possibilities then.

(The symptoms are merely niggling annoyances, so don't feel too sorry for me just yet. :-) ).

PS. I suppose it's possible that it may all be due to too much chocolate (if such a thing is possible).

Don't push this analogy too far, or your doctor will turn you off and then on again to see if that helps.

A real shame that humans don't come with a reset button or software going back to last known good configuration.
I think I missed my last update too.

Beat me to it... though I was gonna suggest you try that even before seeking the help of a professional ;-)

Yikes! I hadn't considered that. I'll keep an eye out for him heading towards the defibrillator, in case I need to make a run for it.

I think explaining ECT has been easier in the era of computer resets. Between that and general anaesthesia, quite a few people get a "reboot". If heart-stopping action is required, cardiologists do that for irregular heartbeats, not to mention when doing valve surgery. Fortunately hearts reboot pretty well.

Sooo, just be careful who you make this joke to ... and check what equipment is in the room first.
