Tasmanians Outnumbered on BWT as of Today

Postby Son of a Beach » Tue 27 Oct, 2009 10:00 am

As of today, the non-Tasmanian members on Bushwalk Tasmania have outnumbered the Tasmanians!

At least officially according to the statistics (from a stats page I created to watch a few things periodically):
Regions.png

However, most of the 113 members with a region listed as "(none specified)" are likely to be Tasmanians, as they are all members from early in the history of this site before the region field existed in the member profiles.

So if the Tasmanians want to turn this around, then those without a region in their profile will need to set it now! :-)

In some ways, it's sad that we are not as locally focussed as was the original intention of this site, however, we have not lacked local information because it. In other ways it's terrific that the site has become as valuable tool for many people outside of Tasmania, and that they in turn have contributed valuable information for everybody.

You do realise that many of your "others" become "tourists" - some even regularly.
And some get so enthralled they end up shifting to this amazing island!

Some even day dream about the place when they are not there.
And some even like to play games about where photos might be from.

mm.. Tasmania-Hobart/Derwent area should be reduced by 1 and other country plus 1. :)

And the "not specified" would have been from the days when it wasn't a requirement to add a location - the same days when the site wasn't as well known and it was primarily for Tasmanians.
Tassie always rules, despite what the numbers look like.

I second all of that eggs

Thank you Nik for providing such a fantastic resource for all Australian bushwalkers, whether from Tasmania or elsewhere. :)

Happy to say that as of this November, I'll be able to make a positive difference to the Tassie numbers. :)
(oops - I meant as a numerical value - not tooting my own horn...)

And yes - thanks Nik - and everyone else for the great resource that this site provides on so many levels..

Hey Jules,
Dont we have you booked in for another "real snow walk" when you come back and I am certain that you promised to make Kuo Teh with a dipping sauce on our next hut trip :)
Enjoy your time at home but keep in touch with "The Strollers" and don't forget to send lots of photographs.

Thankyou Corvus - as always. The ferry trip is only days away, so I'm vaguely terrified (but excited too)! I am looking forward to seeing the Tasmanian coast in the first light. :D

That ferry trip is great the first time you arrive. I had been anticipating my arrival in Tassie for so long, I had everything pictured in my head - I had still water and a full moon in mid-winter and stood on the top deck soaking it in - a frightening transition in life at the time, but the best thing I have ever done :D .

If you are in the South - hook up for a Southern Stroll(we need the numbers).

BTW - I've been here 3 years and feel maybe 50/50 Tassie/Sandgroper, all I miss is warm water, and mum!

Well - I got here! The ferry trip WAS great - I rode up the dock with my bike and trailer with a big contingent of Harley Davidson riders. It was pretty funny really. We had lightning off the starboard side and fog later in the evening. I was being entertained at the time by an outlaw bikie club!! The Devonport coastline is very pretty - and the weather has given me a whole heap of variety in the short time I've been here. Everyone has been incredibly friendly. About to go and experience the thrill of changing my "region" to Tasmania... no fixed address. :D

Thanks everyone for the encouragement and inspiration I have found here. It's been greatly appreciated.
I hope that I will have the opportunity to catch up with some of you once I have figured out where to live/work etc. Happy trails!!

... So Nik - plus 1 for Tassie.

Just curious - what other interesting stats can you drag out? Like, what's the M/F/na split? Or the age ranges? Average posts? etc, etc.

Is there like a stats dashboard that could be available for members? I would find this quite interesting for about 5 mins...

Ollster... The only stats dashboard equivalent is one that I wrote myself. It only tracks 3 sets of figures but I can query the database directly to extract anything else (in theory) on an ad-hoc basis. If I remember I'll do a query for the gender stats when I get back to a computer with a real keyboard.

Incidentally, the stats my own page track are:
regions as per the screenshot posted above
how people found the site, eg Internet search, word of mouth
post rates per person, sorted from most prolific posters to most infrequent posters

I bet a few people would like to see that last one, but as it includes individual people, I don't think it would be fair to post it without permission from everybody on it (ie everybody).

Well, it won't keep you going for 5 minutes, but the answer to your first request for stats is now in this new topic. Other stats might get posted over time, and people can request stats in that topic, if they wish. If I have the time, the SQL skills, I'll consider such requests there.

Well, I'm technically half and half. My body is currently on the mainland, but my heart and soul belong eternally to that misty little island down there.

And if I could find a decent, reliable job, I'd be back down in a flash. Well, during the warmer months, anyway . . .
