Photo Comp File Size limit increased

Postby wildwalks » Sat 13 Feb, 2021 3:30 pm

Hi All
A few people have asked to make it easier to upload images to the forum and to the photo comp. Last month we increased upload size to the forum. Today I have increased the limit from 5mb to 10mb to the photo comp. This will hopefully make it easier for people who directly upload images.

Love all the images :)

Thanks

Matt :)

Is that the frantic rush of people updating this month's entries I hear ... ?

Thanks Matt. Makes it a lot easier.

Yes, thank you Matt :D. You would not believe how much fiddling it can take to get the file size under 5mb and preserve photo quality.

That will certainly be handy for some people - I used to have that problem, but once I started resizing to 2000px on one side, the 5mb limit never seemed to be an issue.

However, is there a way that the original images - or something larger than 800px wide - can be viewed for the comps? Even my crappy phone supposedly displays 1080 x 2160 px!

Lops, I think what Tom is referring to is the way that the comp entries are displayed on the forum for voting. So you could look at any image in any of the comp result pages, e.g.

Image

The issue is that the forum software auto resizes all entries for historical reasons. From the entry submission page:
"Note that photos will automatically be scaled down to maximum of 800 pixels for viewing and voting"

The result is that when people are viewing the entries for voting they are looking at a fairly small image that fills only a fraction of most screens.

I do not know the answer and am unfamiliar with this area. Leave this with me.

Could the site just accept any file size and resize to a sensible size for display purposes?

One max size for the comps and an even smaller size for general posts.

Crollsurf, it's a coding aspect about which, like Sergeant Schultz, I know nothing. There are competing priorities.

Sorry Lophophaps, only just came back to this forum!

http://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=31429 has a photo of mine (4 - Wanganderry Sunset) which has been resized to 800px x 334px. The photo was originally submitted at 2000px x 837px.

The resizing effect is most pronounced in panoramas, because the long edge is resized to 800px, and the short edge proportional to that.

And here's a couple more:
http://bushwalk.com/photocomp/images/62 ... 411740.png (from http://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=35922)
http://bushwalk.com/photocomp/images/62 ... 042783.png (from http://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=35925)

Compare the second photo to this to see a larger version. It would be great to get something more along this size in the comp.

On a tangential note, I read bushwalk.com at 130% as the text size is very small - so the photos that are downsized are then upsized by 130% - making them look fairly blurry. This is perhaps specific to me (and possibly other people?).
