My Eureka Expedition tent has been going strong from the day I bought it from Allgoods Launceston in 1998. In April this year we used it at Lees Paddocks. I marveled how well it's holding up after 12 years. And yes it's had some big trips, like the Spires for example. While on the overland track in October I started to ponder: "It is a heavier tent, when compared to the modern ones. What if I look online for a lighter Eureka tent now our dollar is so high?. You can't believe how much cheaper it is to buy tents direct from America now.
For example the Eureka Backcountry 1 person tent. This tent is less than 2 kg in weight and sells on Amazon.com for about US$140. That's a lot less than what this type of tent would sell for here.
How about the classic 3 season tent from Eureka, weighting in at just 2.22kg and a two manner. The Eureka Zeus Classic Single Wall Tent is selling online for under US$115.
But to top all this is the Eureka Alpenlite Two-Person Four-Season Expedition Tent at just 3.4kg and US$230 dollars. That's nearly 1 kg lighter than my old Eureka Expedition Tent and cheaper than the 1998 prices! I can't believe the prices of tents on Amazon.com , most around US$130. Some of these tents sell for AU$600+ in the local stores.

Yes- the Internet definitely poses a risk to local outfitters.

Have a look at the new 'lighter' Eureka tents before you consider buying. The ones I have seen are lighter than the old ones for a reason. The floors for a start are a piece of crap - you would definitely need a footprint under it. Don't expect the new one to last as long as the old one. Might be that I have only seen a few of their poorer models, but personally I'd steer clear. I should point out that I too have been impressed with Eureka tents I have had in the past.
