TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Best bang for your buck (waterproof jacket)

Wed 22 Jun, 2011 9:46 am

I have used the search function without any luck. I want to buy a waterproof jacket for <$120. I will this mostly for hiking (not hardcore). Do you have any suggestions? I'm not in any rush and happy to wait for particular sales or used items? Or is the $120 too restrictive? I appreciate your help

Don't buy a jacket, instead get a poncho from Aussie disposals, failing that anything made for road workers, won't be sexy but it will be reliably waterproof, with retro reflective tape I have seen good uninsulated jackets for as little as $80-

I wouldnt recommend it. Unfortunatly in this modern day and age of OHS, I have to wear one of those jackets and they are not good. They are heavy, not very breathable and you look like a council worker

have you thought about a second hand coat, there are a few going in the market place at the moment and if they are your size you could get yourself a good value coat.

For $120 I reckon you could find a pretty reasonable jacket online from the US and get it posted as well.
e.g. A random pick from a US site that delivers to Australia..

Azza, ive tried this one, nice summer jacket, track jacket or for justin but not anywhere, anytime. I'd prefer something thicker first up or once only.... good price though (that Was..)

You can buy cheap 3 ply laminate (waterproof breathable) jackets from this sight. Most sizes are now gone.

They'll usually throw in a free pair of socks or something with your purchase. Once I even scored a free rain jacket, although only PU Nylon type.

Pretty good if you ask me

+1 I also immediately thought of the Wilderness Wear Japara jackets. My local Snowgum/Scout Outdoot Centre has them.

Mont used to make Japara as well, up until last year I think. Might be able to find one on the shelf if you like in the right shop, I am moderately sure they have stopped making them now though :( (And I think they were more $160 range).

Mountain Hardwear Epic Conduit jackets on clearance at MD for $124.95 Pretty similar to the MD Photon or Helium jacket.
