Thanks for the report Under10kg. 'Sounds like some things were learnt despite the lack of “weather” to really test the tent.

Regarding your proposed measures to increase stability in the wind and prevent rain entering the tent:

1. Do you think the 4 additional tie downs are required in addition to using the loops on either side of the central pole sleeve and using your poles at each end with a middle tie (earlier post)(and/or the crossing pole)?

2. Could the possibility of horizontal rain entering the tent not be avoided by adjusting the various tensioners so that there’s less or no gap between the bottom of the fly and the top of the bathtub floor? (I guess the cost here is less ventilation and possibly increased condensation).

Thanks again. I’ll also be interested to heart how the Moment copes with harsher conditions.

I would definitely install the pole guylines to cope better with side winds. ((that is what the black piece of grosgrain on the yellow sleeve is there for)

I feel in a strong wind having the whole tent hanging from two tent pegs could be suss. I suppose if they are tired down to a tent platform that would be OK as you know they would not give away. Peging out the hoop pole bottoms could reduce the chance of pole breakage I feel if the wind changed to come in from the side in very strong winds.
I think there would be less flapping of the tent in strong gusty winds if there was additional tie down points on the sides but these are not really essential. The tent manual does say to find a sheltered site.
The floor has a great feature that 4 inches are held down by velco next to the center side hoop pole.
One can unzip this and raise the inner ground sheet wall to reduce the chance of rain blowing in.
Franco posted a picture of this as I was writing this.
There is too big a gap between the side walls and the outer to reduce as you suggest I think.

Good review, sounds like you're pretty happy with it.

I had a little damage of about half an inch hole in the side mesh from an animal that needs a patch.

So you stuck him in the eye with a tent peg? haha

Mesh should be easy to fix.

i was in search for a new tent. wanted something 2 person, freestanding, bomb proof, waterproof, relatively light and hopefully kept water out enough so that i didnt have to sleep in a wet sleeping bag. The Hilleberg brand popped up a few mentions here and there on the internet, but mostly of the 1 person akto. emailed Hilleberg for their recommendations on my requirements, and they introduced in their own words: "our ultimate lightweight mountain assualt tent, is the Jannu..."

Not much on the net about these tents, but oh man! a direct recommendation from a manufacturer, and the cool words "assualt" did it for me. total price including postage was just under $900 AUD. still cheaper than my $1000 black diamond lighthouse tent and I guess it was an emotional buy, after sleeping in low degree temperatures with a wet sleeping bag and shivering from being rained upon inside a tent. After forking out big cash, those conditions tend to PI$$ you off.

But this is where it gets sweet:
after i made the emotional purchase 2 weeks earlier, thoughts of me going into hardcore territory where the jannu is required, seemed very remote - given my work commitments. the TT moment is mentioned all over from UK and US as being a very capable sub 1kg tent, and being at under $300 delivered, this seemed very cheap compared to my other 2 tents. dived in purchased.

Today the Jannu arrived, and to top it off, i get a package from Franco!?!?! THE Franco Darioli from all the bushwalking forums you read!

Reviews for the moment are covered to death here, but i will be making in-depth reviews for the hilleberg Jannu as soon as bad weather comes my way in sydney. I have over 10 tents now and first glance seems the hilleberg and moment are my 2 best purchases to date out of all my gear. Jannu will come with me for all high mountain trips.

For the moment, the moment looks like it will be my favourite tent for a very long time. i just really dont know about the 1 minute set up claim though.

There are several closet members out there.
A mate came around with his new toys on Sunday (MLD Patrol Shelter/Z Pack/MLD Compact Caldera Cone and some more cuben "fabric" ) we played for hours.
We were interrupted by the Grand Prix circus (Hornet and Roulettes overhead) but quickly went back to play.
Honestly we make some train spotters look normal.

Has anyone else with a tarptent moment managed to weigh their tent? its advertised as 810 grams but i cant seem to mix and match my numbers to get 810.

here are my measurements for weights:

tent: 697 grams
tent bag: 18
2 x 10g pegs: 20
peg bag: 3
cross pole pole 146
--------------------------------- TOTAL = 884 grams

this is 74 grams over the stated weight. i wonder if this is due to mine having a few extra bits of material? or differences in thickness of the sheet? I would be very interested from other owners what their weights are. Especially Franco who may have access to many many of these moments. even if my scales were wrong, i think 10% off is abit too much error to blame on scales?

I have had 4 TT shelters so far. (I did not weigh the ones I shipped out...)
The only one that I know the exact weight is the Scarp, that was 1330 g, listed as 1250g on the product page.
My Rainbow was slightly under the given weight, the Contrail about the same and the Sublite just a bit above but I might have included the seam sealer with that one.
On the net you will find that some have reported lower and some higher weights, so that does represent an "average"
(yes coating does make the difference)

The measurements of that are similar to what you will get inside your pack or pack pocket, in other words somewhat compressed.

You can ,maybe, get a better idea of what it looks like in the flesh.

As mentioned in the "description" box at Yahoo! this is just the way I do it, not the "best " way.
I have tried the syringe method and using my finger but find the brush easier. Next time I might get a sponge type brush.

I had a bit of a bet with Henry Shires.
If he could set up the Moment in 50 sec I would eat my shorts (I have edible undies just for that) and on his part if he could not do it in less than a minute (I had commented that I couldn't) he would move to Inner Mongolia.
The Mongols are safe, he can do it in 55 sec.
I still have my edible undies.

Just got an E Mail from the TT dispatch department this morning (that is from Henry's wife...) and things are not that good stock wise.
There is a large backorder list for the Moment (and the Scarps) and no stock. Henry is working on that right now. That is trying to get the factory to step up production..

I did note that the payment had been drawn down on my credit card, the order form says it will only be drawn down on dispatch..... I can assume two things from that . I am off to NT mid August and would love to take it with me but I get it when I get it i guess, I am sure it will be worth waiting for .

Some companies will put a hold on the money on your credit card without actually drawing on it (I think? Not really sure how this works). Then they can release the hold if the sale falls through, or complete the transaction at dispatch time.

Putting a hold on the funds makes them unavailable to you, but doesn't actually withdraw it from your account or cause interest to be charged/lost (again, this is my understanding only, based on my interpretation of my own experience. I've not actually checked with the bank as to what is really going on, so I may be wrong).

yep, its kinda like a guarantee for them (and you)
they want to do the right thing by waiting till the item is on its way b4 charging you, but at the same time they want to ensure that they get paid. so the transaction gets half done, its still in your account (gaining/loosing interest as it always did), but its set aside for them. all they have to do is click a button and the transaction completes. this means that in 2 months time when they are ready to dispatch, they dont suddenly find that your account is empty and they have a (hypothetically) fully custom order on there hands that they may struggle to on-sell.

they know they have the money, you know your account wont go into the negative in a months time when they pull the money

Hey All,
Im looking to buy a new 1 man tent and after reading reviews on the tarptent's, seem to have narrowed it down to either the Scarp1 or the Moment. I'd be using it mostly around QLD and Northern NSW, though I am hoping to get down and do the Southern Ranges over summer. I've read the reviews on the Moment here and it seems that people are pretty happy with it, also read the reviews on the Scarp in the tarptent/hillberg debate. Anway i'm 6 2' long and while it would seem that the Moment would be more suitable for most of the walking I do (especially if I added the crossing pole if expecting windy conditions), just wondering what opinions others may have as to what would be the way to go (sadly I can't justify owning more than 1!).

not much snow where you're going, so i think the moment will do fine. its cheaper than the scarp too.

Like steveJ, you'll have to wait abit till production catches up though. Ive got a moment but havnt had chance to use it yet. too busy testing other tents but the moment certainly looks very capable. I think it might be going on ebay starting from $1 soon because i'm still drooling over Tony's hexamid. Like all cottage industries, i'm still having to wait for them hexamids to catch up with production (currently a 2 month wait)
