TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

HMG UltaMid

Just thought I would post a quick write up and a few pictures of the HyperLite Mountain Gear mid that I received not long ago.

I already have a couple of pyramid style shelters and I enjoy the design but I always felt I was at the height limit (6'1") for the length of my main shelter if I required it pitched close to the ground in a bad storm. The design of the pyramid shelter to me is a good compromise of protection, weight and ease of set up and can be used, in most locations, for all seasons with options of adding an inner tent whether it be mesh or fabric. I also find it a pretty fun design as you can also combine groundsheets, bivy sacks, hanging bug nets etc depending on the situation.

I was excited when I heard that HMG were designing a pyramid shelter because they are one of the better manufacturers that use Cuben, in my opinion, and they have always designed their products to be very sturdy, they will add weight if necessary to make a product more reliable rather than simply going for the lowest weight. Their customer support, website and marketing is also far ahead of most other cottage suppliers which I imagine is supported by the higher prices they charge. I received this product within two weeks of placing the order, including shipping to Australia. A big difference from other cottage companies who have a 12 week plus waiting list for the product to be made. Once again, I'm sure that the higher cost of the HMG product supports this practice.

Here are some pictures of the Ulta2 set up, I haven't had a chance to use it in the field yet. The quality seems very good and as you can see there is heaps of room for 2... weight is about 500-600 grams (I haven't weighed it after adding mid point guylines)

Very rushed write up I will add some more info later and clean up some spelling and grammar issues!

Very nice. I love these type of shelter's. Own a MLD Cuben DuoMid myself. Yes, the waiting was a pain, but worth it in the end.

Is that .75oz Cuben?

Do you still have your cuben duomid? These are obviously very similar but do you find that this hmg shelter offers more room? Are the materials stiffer?

I'm keen on this one.... And the event khufu. Not sure which to go with yet.

Yeah .75 ounce cuben, plenty strong enough.

Ninja I do still have the DuoMid but I will sell it now, surplus to requirement. Locus Gear mids looks awesome however very similar to the MLD. This HMG mid is massive... it is seriously a lot bigger than I thought it would be. Sure does take up a large footprint however this doesn't seem to be a huge issue with floorless shelters (in my opinion).

The Apex cone is very stiff, it looks very very sturdy... I think you could use branches or anything sharpish without worrying too much...

For me, the the DuoMid is a fantastic 1 person mid while the UltraMid would be very comfortable for 2 people and still extremely light for 1...

Hey Franco, yeah they are GG LT4 poles and not 100% sure on the height, I didn't measure it, just lashed the poles together and adjusted until I was happy with it :)

When I get a chance I'll have to set it up again, would be interested to set up along side the DuoMid for a size comparison. Will also see if single LT4 and pole extender can be used and how strong it seems...

mmmm can't remember I'll check tomorrow and get back to you. I thought they were taped... not really too fussed- HMG are well known for working with cuben and have used the material for a long time so I'm pretty confident they know what they're doing!

HMG, Z-Packs and MLD are pretty much best of the best with cuben fibre

Edit: Here is the size of this mid vs the DuoMid and SuperMid... info stolen from another post on BPL... as you can see it's a substantial size difference!

HMG Ultamid 2 107 x 83 x 64H
MLD Duomid 95 x 60 x 54H
MLD Supermid 107 x 107 x 69H
HMG Ultamid 4 111 x 111 x 75H

Let us know how you get on with it over time.
