TIP: The online
Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Thought this advertorial from last Monday's Examiner may cause some amusement, particularly for the ultra-lightweight brigade:
Anyone interested in a solar distiller which produces a litre or more of fresh hot water per hour from sea water and will also cook your dinner?
Only 5Kg in a briefcase sized package

Crikey, mains power must be expensive where he lives. It'd take me 25 years to make back my dough on a home solar system where I am.
At 5kg it's be ok for sea kayakers (the distiller).

At 5kg definitely just a bit on the heavy side

. What would you have to leave behind to take one of those things? Oddly they seem to be targetting bushwalkers as a specific market. Sounds interesting though.
A bit more info here, suggesting that bushwalkers can carry them because they are "very light":
