I had a small lantern, maybe 40 mm high and a diameter a bit bigger than a CMOS battery. I cannot locate this in the shops. Can anyone advise where such a lantern or similar can be bought?

I can highly recommend the nitecore LR10 USB rechargeable lantern. Has a good 8 lumen low setting that will last week's and two higher settings. It's very robust, has a hang loop and a magnetic base. Best lantern I've ever had

The Treadlite ones are good too but won't run anywhere near as long. They do recharge extremely fast and are very light and compact.

What about just using a white plastic bag around your current headlamp, at low output setting?

Ive just picked up on this “lantern” approach, and will try the really simple concept first.

Sub 20g IIRC, and cheap as chips. You need a USB power brick, but most of us carry one of those these days.

Lophophaps - I've had a couple of small clip on type LED lanterns than are tiny and use 2032 or 2016 button cell batteries.

I only had the Niteize Moonlit and not used the Decathlon offering but I have given up on that battery format as it's not rechargeable and I don't want to carry lots of button cells.

I've got one of the USB lanterns to use with a power bank instead however it is not as lantern like or as handy and clip-onable as the others
