TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

White Mountain packs

Postby garyp » Tue 20 Sep, 2011 2:41 pm

Hello,

Has anyone seen or had experience with White Mountain packs. I know they come out of Korea and on paper they seem resonable. But what are the packs really like? Paper is one thing and in the flesh is another. And the company does seem to have perculiar hours.

If they are acceptable for several days (up to 5 days or so) in the bush, has anybody got an opinion about the:

Ascent 65 or the Main Peak 85 http://www.whitemountain.com.au/hike_packs_menu.html. I realise there is a fair capacity difference between the two, but I do like the lines of the alpine packs of all makes in general.

These, by the way, are not the only packs I'm considering. One Planet and WE come readily to mind too.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Cheers

Hi Gary,

I have an old (about 25 year) White Mountain Pack. Its now absolutly stuffed but has had an abslute flogging over the years & as a loner to various mates, so at least then their packs were good.

Having said that, its not a patch on the One Planet ( I now have one of these) or WE packs & these are Aussie brands as well.

Hi Gary,
White Mountainpacks were originally a brand brought into Australia by the intertrek shops. They were simple and good and were imported for a lower price point and to comptete with some of the other imported brands at the time. I sold them for a few years in never really had any dramas. I cant remember any returned. They were never in the same league as the local stuff or the other brands we got from UK or Europe but they were never meant to be.

I havent heard of the brand for a lot of years so I cant really comment on what its like now but in the early days it was basic, cheap and reliable.

Not quite in the same category as what you're looking for. I bought a cheap convertible bum bag/day pack thingy from them about 12 months ago. My observation is similar to Gary's comments above, basic but well made for the price. I'd expect that their other products would be similar. From memory they do have odd hours but I eventually spoke to them on the phone. Found them friendly, helpful and easy to deal with. That said I own two WE packs and they're bombproof.

Thanks fellas,

Still might get one for my son as an entry level pack. His old man might treat himself to something different :)
