TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Jetboil PCS problem with gas supply

Postby cmc2234 » Sat 01 Oct, 2011 5:02 pm

I have a Jetboil PCS, bought in Dec 2010 from the USA (we're in Sydney). It's worked wonderfully & we love it.

However I've just gone to use it & find that no gas comes out. We are trying to use it in Sydney, so it's not an altitude or cold thing. The cylinder works fine on a Kovea stove, but just in case swapped in another cylinder onto the Jetboil. Still no gas. We don't get as far as using the piezo ignition as there is no gas smell or gas hissing when the on/off knob is turned on/off. Á friend suggested that it might be a blocked valve, so we have used a fine pin, which goes down approx 1cm down & hits something hard. Have tried googling this issue for resolutions & tried the Jetboil web site without luck. Our fellow bushwalking friends have said that MSRs come with a maintenance kit to unblock jets & pull it apart. There doesn't seem to be such a beast for Jetboil, just buy a replacement burner for $US45.

I've emailed Jetboil in the US, the US supplier & Sea to Summit who appear to be the Aussie agents & am waiting their responses. Does anyone with a Jetboil have any suggestions that we can try?

Thanks very much, for any assistance.

I don't know if this is still an issue since the post is from October, but I've had success with clearing blockages in stoves before by using compressed air blown in the opposite direction from the way in which gas flows. I actually did this on an Optimus Crux Lite not a Jetboil, but the principle should be the same. I disassembled the stove to the point where I could get direct access to the upper opening of the brass gas jet (the point from which gas normally issues forth). I applied air into this opening. I reassembled everything, attached a canister, and the stove was again operational.

Somehow I missed this post.

Unfortunately JetBoil stove burner heads are not easy to take apart and while the valve can be partly dismantled some parts can not be dismantled at all. There is a large circlip under the top plate that needs to be removed first then the rest is a bit easier but still fiddly, but care must be taken not to break the piezo lighter.

Like HJ has mentioned it looks like the jet maybe blocked and some compressed air blown back though the top of the jet may do the trick.
