For a while now I've been playing with alcohol stove for field us as I enjoy using them vs the canisters. They're light, burn well and Im not in such a rush that I need my water in 3 minutes. On a recent trip a fellow forum member had a bushbuddy going and I loved the idea of using a wood stove (especially whilst hammocking). After looking at the various options I decided to go with the Vargo titanium hexagon stove.

I really like the fact this little stove only weighs in at 116g, can make a lovely little fire, I've seen an awesome you tube clip where someone inverts it in an al cake tray and cooks a steak on the base plate and throws some spuds in on the coals (ill find the link and post). Take a light alcohol stove and metho as a back up and its a great windshield/pot stand.

As this was a chrissy present I've only had the chance to light it in the garden but it works a treat. Very easy to light. Cottonball with vasoline and kindling to light and your off. Its been a wet old summer in Sydney so dry wood is hard to find but it still managed to boil 2 cups of water in just over 11 mins.

Thanks for the review. I take it it does not come with a fire plate? I wonder if a piece of al-foil or the like would do the trick or even the titanium plate from Trail Designs?

No it doesn't Andrew. I usually take a throw away al cake dish with me for normal stove use. Weighs nothing and throw it away once it gets to outa sorts. Al foil would work.

have been umming and arring about one of these for a while. will be interested to hear how it goes in the real world

How did this set up work in the 'real world?'

I have a Vargo BOT and love it, but chose the stainless steel options which is almost twice the weight because I wa worried about the durability of the titanium.
Now wanting to add Vargo Hexagon Wood Stove and Ti-lite mug, but in Titanium to see how they fare.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

I’m interested in some reviews of this stove setup. Both with using it as a wood burner and placing an alcohol burner on the grate.
