Ideas for lunches for hikes- no cooking required

Mon 12 Nov, 2012 6:05 pm

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has some ideas for packed (light) lunch ideas for multiday hikes. I don't want to have to cook, boil water etc, will leave that for breakfast & dinner.

Thanks!
Sue.

1x 2 Pack Natures Valley Oat Bar 812kj
1 x All Natural Bakery fruit and nut Oat Slice 1798kj
1x Hans Striker stick 308kj
2 x Happy Cow cheese triangles 197kj each

Salmon and tuna sachets bread rolls and cheese. Fruit.
Im not averse to a pre made bacon and egg roll which will go a couple of days too.
On the get out of gaol card for free check out some of the protein chocolate bars which you can eat inch by inch over the day.
There should be some sort of dog kibble for walkers. Pain that there isnt.

On the I know you didnt ask that front, whats your cooking set like. Sometimes its important to get something hot in during the day, and I still reckon a smallish metal beaker that your burner, lighter, tea coffee sugar and instant soup nests into is worth sitting in the top of your pack. Drag this and your gas can out and brew up and away in less time than most people seem to take to organise their pots and pans and shields and all the dinky crap. The number of times you see people totally busted at the end of the day because they dont look after themselves.

I used to struggle to find things for lunches until I discovered dehydrated dips.

Make a dip (e.g. hummus, baba ganoush, etc), dehydrate it, use a blender or mortar and pestle to grind to a powder. At lunch just add water and mix (careful not to add too much) and you have a tasty topping for biscuits, or filling for mountain bread. Keeps well for multi-day walks and 30gm dry weight is enough for a lunch.

It is better to make your own dip as most commercial ones have too much oil and won't dehydrate properly, but some people have had success with some brands (can't remember specific names).

Can't find where i've put the weight, but I reckon it's pretty light:

6-8 Woollies Select brown rice crackers. Boys probably need more  I've been thru a big range of crackers over the years, but these are my favourite. I expect they'll stop making them soon...

2 cheese triangles, whichever are on special
Little containers of vegemite, jam, whipped peanut butter (lighter weight, and easy to spread thinner, so goes much further).
The cheese goes with the veg or the jam or by itself. Sometimes I take a couple of lettuce leaves to spiff up the first days. (I hear some laughter...)
If i'm sharing, i'll take pate of some kind for the first couple of days. I also plan to try dehydrating homus.

The little containers come from woollies, made for dressing, so don't leak too much. They all fit in one of the sizes of chinese food container, along with 3 days worth of bikkies. I take a teenslie spatula instead of a knife, and that fits in too.
In really cold weather i do like some soup or hot choc as well if convenient, and in hot weather, some fizzy powdered drink

Barley roll up flat bread with cheese and salami. Provided its not too hot, the ingredients last a week no worries and its high in kilo joules. A cup of tea is also very refreshing. My next trip though, will probably be vita wheats with peanut butter and vegemite. The secret is to make lunch as easy as possible, so you actually stop to eat.

Roll your own sushi.... goes down a treat for lunch.
The internal ingredients I'll leave to your imagination.
Just prepare the rice before you leave home. Don't forget to take along the roasted seaweed sheet
and a tiny fishy wishy shaped bottle of soy sauce too. :)
Use on day one of your hike.

Hmmmppph. Waste of good walking time. Jerky, crackers, nuts & lollies in pockets, bits of cheese and chocolate handy. And munch as you go.

Acshully, lunch is one of my favourite times of day! On a summit, view spot or by a babbling brook if at all possible - a time to soak in the sights, sounds & smell of the bush to the full - as well as gustatory enjoyment :)

hmm, some great ideas here for day hikes and weekenders.

For multi-day trips, I find the flat breads in resealable bags to be very convenient. Add salami, cheese or peanut butter as toppings. Ok, not nearly as tasty as some of the suggestions here, but on expedition-type trips shelf life and just getting enough calories and protein in takes precedence.
