food drops: principals and practices?

I have never done a food drop before. What do people do for concealment and preservation (from animals especially).

I'm assuming you are dropping it off near a road crossing or not too far from one? If so a cheapo plastic box with lid from a $2 dollar shop wrapped/taped in a green garbage bag does the trick. Also those plasterers buckets with the tight lid work well. Hide it behind a log and it should be there when you walk through.

Bad thing is you will need to come back and retrieve the containers later.

usually I do keep them in the harder plastic boxes/tubs and do hide them.
Also put your name on them and the dates you are likely to use it, contact details etc.
If you don't use it and can not get to retrieve the stash we can remove the unwanted/un used stash.
Also in some cases of fires/floods etc the emergency services will ask for any food/gear stashes in the bush that can be used to help out stranded campers/walkers/4WD'ers etc.
And as mentioned above please retrieve the empties.

Hi Marty,

Thanks for your note about food drops. I will be leaving the food along the Jamieson-Licola Road, not sure where exactly yet as I have never been there. I will obviously record the GPS coords and hand them over to you should I not make it to the drop. It's 'only' a 3.5 hour drive from where I live though, so not such a big deal.

I will be sure to retrieve the stash on my way back from Hotham with my ride.

enjoy the walk I.
If you need to get the food drop picked up give us a note and I may be able to get someone (or myself) to pick it up.
Cheers
