Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has tried one of these devices?

I hear that another member has just purchased a similar bluetooth device.

These sounds interesting.

Hmm - me thinks you and "The" Flyfisher have been colluding

To answer your question no I have never tried one of them. But yes my new Nokia LD-3w bluetooth GPS reciever works very well. It has good reception, similar to my Etrex Venture Hc - need more testing to determine a winner though. I haven't got any GPS software on my computer however so I have only used it on my Nokia E51 with Nokia maps and Google Maps.

Haven't tried them.
Any wonder they have sold out at ~$31 - this ebayer has them for $97 delivered.
I found this device on eBay, also there is this one. All more expensive than your option though.

It has got me thinking - I wonder how many people use their GPS primarily for navigation / rely on them / have their maps loaded etc.
Generally I use the 1:25000 Tasmaps and only need the GPS to check accurately where I might be in reference to where I think I am.
Hence the small light basic eTrex does me fine, no map loading on this beast.

I pretty much rely on my GPS in so far as I almost never use my compass. I carry 1:100000 (sometimes 125000) maps and use the co-ordinates on the GPS to place myself on the map, if I want to get somewhere I take the co-ordinates from the map, punch em into the GPS and follow the arrow. Of course the old compass is always there as a backup. The Shonky Maps and Contours Australia on the screen are nice for showing contours and stuff and also for use in the car (most vehicle tracks are marked). Handy for just looking to see how far to the top of the hill or to the hut or which way to go to avoid the steepest stuff etc. Certainly not necessary but for the extra $30 bucks nice to have.
Guess I could just use my phone and a map now and save a few grams

Just stumbled upon some other unusual GPS gadgets...
Thought I'd share, in case someone out there is interested in playing with such electronics.
Worth mentioning tho, I wouldn't stake my life on them in Tassie scrub. You get what you pay for.
