Hi all,
Just loaded new versions of all maps.
27/04/2019:
New versions of all OSM maps based on current OSM data.
VICMAP based on current DELWP road/track data
VIC and SA hydro now show non-perennial water bodies as hatched, rather than solid blue.

That might read as a very subtle change, but for large parts of SA in particular, that "solid blue" always gave me a laugh when I recalled all the rock-strewn "creeks" I'd struggled to walk "in", or is it "on"?

So I concur with neilmny, great stuff, Andrew.

Unfortunately I don't pay a lot of attention to the SA map. When I looked I noticed that the wide, dry river beds were rendered solid blue. Yes it is laughable. I've just uploaded a new version that renders them as brown dots.

Also for SA, I noticed that the contours data that I used only covers the 1:50k map area. No contours are shown outside this area.

mkgmap is the program I use to make the img file from osm files, but there is a lot of stuff that I have to do to massage the osm data, and combine with shape files from various state mapping departments ready for mkgmap.

ogr2osm to extract and convert shape files to osm.
osmosis to extract state by state data from the full Australian osm file.
osmosis to merge and sort osm files.
splitter to split large osm files into a size that mkgmap can deal with.

The various steps are all strung together with a script (perl), so it's largely an automated process that takes an hour or so to run.

Just in case there was any misinterpretation. I wasn't laughing at the quality of the cartography. Rather, I was humoured by what nature does: once in every couple of decades or so, many watercourses could be in flood. The solid blue would be most apt. Murky reddish-brown with log jams even better. So now I've got a choice of SA maps to use, depending on the weather!

Will copy a new version up tomorrow sometime.

Andrewp, I'm revisiting this post (2018/12/31) as the same problem is apparent in your latest VicMap. Random sections of continuous roads are missing.

So far the only other one I've downloaded is SA and it seems fine.

Thanks peregrinator for pointing this out. A problem with some of the road data caused a chunk of data to be missing. It should be fixed now.

The link to get the maps is http://tiny.cc/osm-maps.

I have uploaded new versions of VIC and VICMAP.

I had noticed that some estuaries were missing, particularly in East Gippsland e.g. Mallacoota Inlet. They now include an estuaries layer.

I have also changed the draw order of Sea and Nature Reserves. In the OSM data (around VIC at least) there doesn't seem to be any way of distinguishing between National Parks and Marine National Parks. Hence Marine NP were being rendered as green. Now Sea draws above Nature Reserves and hides them. I don't really need to know about Marine NP, but others may find this change annoying. This may have other ramifications that I haven't noticed yet. Please let me know if you find any.

For Marine Parks it'll be good to show them at some stage.. can sea be transparent? Not I guess!

New versions of all maps with current OSM data.

A couple of rendering changes:
1. Bike paths to purple dashed line.
2. Found some marine NP are tagged as maritime, so they now display over the sea, but many are not and will be hidden behind the sea.

Graham17 wrote:For Marine Parks it'll be good to show them at some stage.. can sea be transparent? Not I guess!

Well no. If it was transparent it wouldn't be blue and I'm afraid Garmin doesn't support partial transparency (ASAIK).

Hi all,

Yet another version for all the OSM maps. Using OSM data from 23 June 2019.

Main reason for the update is to sort out the National/Marine Parks saga. I found parks that were on land and water, so colouring them is never going to work. Now I've settled on just marking the boundary with a green line. It can get a bit complicated in some areas where multiple polygons are defined, but I think it's the best solution to the problem.

Cheers

Any chance of SIX hydro and contours for the rest of New South Wales sometime in the near future? Or is it a massive project?

I'm afraid it's quite a massive project. The data has to be downloaded LGA by LGA. There are ~130 of them and you can only download 5 per day. It would probably be about 13Gb of data. I did enquire about getting the whole state, but the cost was > $1,000. Sorry, but I don't do much walking in NSW.

Thanks very much for maintaining these, Andrew.

Combined with the appropriate DEM files they're absolutely perfect for route planning in QMapShack.

That's a pain, $1000 for the whole state ):

Well, I'll just have to wait and hope that you do an update sometime. In the meantime tho, the OSM maps are fantastic, and thanks for making them available!

Hi all,

Another update with OSM data from 8/8/2019. Have added cliff lines from OSM and for the NSWSIX map added cliff areas from NSW topo data.

Cheers

Within OSM some National Parks (and other things) carry tags for trees too. I haven been adding tree areas as separate ways and removing the wrong tags. But there are a few of them so it will take some time.

And cliff lines .. I have added a few from LPI (Sixmaps) in NSW in some areas. So you may well find some duplication between SIX and OSM.

Thanks Warin for updating OSM. Lack of consistency in tags is a problem.

OSMNSW only has OSM cliff lines and NSWSIX only has SIX cliff data, which are polygons rather lines.

A huge thank you Andrew for your work!

It is really wonderful to have the same maps on my Garmin GPSr and Android phone (Oruxmaps)

Is there anyway to install maps into the Basecamp app - so they are viewable without the GPS attached to computer?

Cheers

Yes. Drag the downloaded file to the Garmin folder located in whatever you are using as a Garmin device. The Basecamp software will then see the map via the device.

Make a Garmin folder on a USB drive and copy the img files there. Basecamp will see the USB as a Garmin device.

Downloading data for 130 LGAs at 5 per day sounds very manageable for a crowdsourcing exercise (26 person days). If there are even a few people from NSW who could get involved, it might only take a few minutes a day for a week or so to collect all the data.

PM me if interested so we can divvy up the downloads so they don't overlap. I've requested the first 5 today.
