I've been toying with the idea of building a micro wind generator for electronic equipment, while on extended walks. My iPod charges via usb, which is 40 mA at 5 volts, (0.2 w). My camera charger output is 650 mA at 4.2 volts (2.7 w). These power requirements are pretty low. Has anyone built or heard about a small motor capable of generating this power ? It would need some sort of regulator to keep the voltage constant, and a lightweight blade. From what I've read, solar is next to useless for hiking, because of tree cover and cloud. I thought a micro wind generator could be attached to a walking pole beside the tent overnight and in the morning, the iPod or camera battery would be charged. The biggest aspect is weight. It must be super lightweight and portable. The weight of the magnets in the motor might kill this idea. I have seen larger pole mounted home made wind turbines, capable of generating 200 plus watts at 12 volt, and I think this concept may be scaleable, down to a few watts output.

Suntreca and Joos both make great solar panels that are tough, durable, light, and efficient.

I use solar energy to charge my iPhone and compact camera. That said, while hiking the phone is an emergency use item for me. The ability to completely 'get away' is so appealing.
