Wow, what a choice , almost too hard to select only 3. Ended up picking places I have been but they all deserve to be on a calender.

Many thanks to everyone who submitted such great photo's

Hey Nik, can't remember seeing any post about details of the calender yet i.e. cost, availability, delivery time etc. I assume you have it in hand and I am jumping the gun.
Congratulations on a fantastic initiative

That will be one of only 12 contenders in the 2008 photo of the year competition. This competition is for photos from last year. :-)

Wow... the photos in this competition are so good that it seems a 4 way tie is looking likely at the moment!

Here's some encouragement for you to vote, if you haven't done so already - an idea shamelessly borrowed from our friends at the Real Tasmania forums...

The winner of the 2007 photo competition will receive the 2007 Bushwalk Tasmania Cup, with the winning photo and winning photographer's forum name printed on it.

The cup will look a little like the one shown below, but will also have the winning photo and the winner's forum name printed on it (as well as the logo). The 2007 BWT cup will also be available for sale from the BWT shop, where anyone can buy it (or one of the other items that will get the winning photo added to it).

I'll aim to do the same for the winners of subsequent Photo of the Year competitions. So make sure you get your photos in for the monthly competitions (there's currently only 4 entries in the September competition, and entries close in 4 days time).

Oh no prizes - I would have entered if only I knew!

Say - wouldn't it be great if all the 2008 monthly winners got a cup as well?

Nice idea  They say imitation is the most sincere form of flattery

Hmmm, just noticed that you intend selling the winning image on merchandise to the public. Maybe I did not read the fine print, but I was unaware that submitting a photo to this site involved assigning copyright and reproductions rights over to the site. Not that I have any entries in this photo of the year comp, but it does concern me. This issue is one that is often discussed among photographers at Flickr and competitions that demand reproduction rights as part of entry are definitely frowned upon by most.

It is a good point, and one that has been duly considered and discussed. After all of the respondents to the initial query agreed with the idea, it was added to the competition rules.

Note that any profits are tiny and will all go back into the website, and the rights to the images are non-transferable, and credited to the photographer (by forum username).

Edit:

Being that we're primarily a walking site, and not a photography site, most of the members are amateur/casual photographers (although certainly not all), and seem to really like the possibility of having some of their pictures published in this way. :-)

Permission was individually sought and granted for each of the past 2008 monthly winners for use in the 2009 calendar (and other BWT promotional material).

Certainly a fantastic set of photos...would be great in a calendar. Congrats to all the entrants. If those photos don't get people motivated....nothing will. Cheers.

Hey Nik,
That broadcast email brought all types out of the woodwork, even crazy Americans!!!

It was great "guiding" Alan on the OT and hearing the differences between the US and Oz. Here is a picture of the 3 of us heading off from Ronney Creek. Never saw the top of a mountain for 4 days!!! http://frankinoz.blogspot.com/2008/05/o ... enery.html

Thanks Alan - it's good to hear from you, and to hear that you had a good trip (albeit a bit wet). How did you go with the battery chargers at Pelion Hut?

I might have to ban you now, for talking politics! ;-)

Congratulations to tasadam on winning the cup for the 2007 Photo of the Year! Also a big congratulations to Mickeymoo for second place and Bludger for third. (I'll put up an announcement and thumbnail on the index page, once I figure out a good way of doing it).

Thanks again to all those who submitted photos. It really was a fantastic set of photos.

I was going to edit the original post in this topic to show who was submitted each photo, but it looked like that was going to reset the poll! So I'll repost the credits here.

Well I must say I am pretty chuffed with my win.
There are some great photos taken and the close voting fr many of the images reflects that.

I thought I would share a little about my image.
I took three photos of this scene, all on the tripod. I set the exposure to manual. F22 at 15mm (wide angle).
Camera is a Nikon D200 and the lens was the Nikon wide angle 12-24 f4 DX lens.
The 3 images were exposed at 1/4, 1/8 and 1/15 second and these are the results -

Image

Image

Image

I overlayed all three photos together in a program to produce a HDR image. This is how a HDR image looks -

Image

Then I used "Tone Mapping" within that program to adjust various levels until I was happy with it.

Image

After that, I opened the finished image in Photoshop and adjusted the sharpness and contrast until I thought it looked good enough.
The result is what you see entered into the competition.
I increased the contrast enough to mystify the branches in the sky - sucking enough definition out of them to produce an eery like effect, yet still holding enough colour and brightness to allow some colour in the foreground, and a correctly exposed lake and sky on the horizon. It's all subjective - I tried editing this image a number of different ways - they all looked good.

Now, to order me a few calendars for Christmas presents I think...

Thanks to everyone who voted!! I've ordered a couple of Calendars, can't wait to see all the great pics in print.

My approach was slightly different to Tasadams' - I took the photo, saved it to my PC, and then posted it here :) . Photoshop isn't really my thing. It was taken with a Pentax K100D, which I've been really impressed with.

The weekend we went was the straight after the big floods last year - our first night was spent holed up in the shelter at the Mersey whitewater picnic area. Thankfully the weather cleared up and we had a great couple of days!

Cheers,
