Why Sony’s Full Frame Pro Mirrorless Was a Fatal Mistake

http://petapixel.com/2016/04/04/sonys-f ... l-mistake/

article explains why you dont really save at all on size and weight against other full frame cameras, as the lenses are bigger..

Thanks for sharing. Not a camera that really interests me anyway but still interesting to see it really does not offer much difference in the market place.

if you are into taking multiple lenses you end up with even more extra bulk and weight than a more conventional full frame SLR.

I run into a few photographers with these cameras, some even in the bush!

The size advantages are best when used with manual FF lenses. Given the short mount to sensor distance, they can take just about any lens. There is a physics truth about lenses: If you want to cover a FF sensor at a certain focal length and max f stop, then the lens has to be a certain size. No getting around that!

The sensor (A7Rii) is arguably as good as the sensor in the best pro versions of Canon or Nikon FF cameras, but if you look at the price comparison, there is no comparison. Pro level cameras are very expensive for good reason.

The downsides of the A7 are lack of weatherproofness, and battery life compared to the DSLR's. That's because it doesn't have an optical viewfinder and it has a small battery like every other mirrorless camera. You just can't squeeze a big battery into a small camera!

I don't have an A7, but maybe I will one day. Great fullframe sensor in there. Would I go back to a FF DSLR? Nope. Too big and heavy!

You know that Sony makes the sensors for most APC/FF cameras these days apart from Canon and Leica? Even some of the u43 cameras.

sony patented a curved sensor some time ago, over a year i think. you can make smaller lenses with it, you have to have special lenses made specifically for the camera to focus on the curving sensor surface.
not sure of what the sensor size was going to be, but no sign of a camera with the sensor in it has come out

I've seen a few videos posted by pros who slate support for Sony cameras. Great when they work though.

I like mine. Sure, the lenses are big and heavy but the photos are magnificent.
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.
