Sat 31 Jan, 2009 7:13 pm

Do any of the the huts have coal heaters on the OT? I was just curious- someone told me they do.

The brand new Windy Ridge Hut (AKA Bert Nichol(a)s) hut did when I was there late last year. Last time I was at Kiora (a few years ago) it was still coal.

Waterfall Valley and New New Pelion are gas. Windermere... I can't remember. It was coal last time I stayed there, but I was too sick to pay any attention to what was going on there last time I passed through for lunch one rainy day several years later.

Scott Kilvert was coal last time I was there, a couple of years ago.

Hi All
When I was there in July, Echo Point - Coal, Narcissis - Coal, Bert Nichols (Windy Ridge) - Wood, KiaOra - Coal, Pelion - Gas, Windermere - Gas and Waterfall Valley - Gas. The problem that we had was most of the coal supplies was just about exhausted, Pelion and Windermere were out of gas.

Hope this helps.

Scott-Kilvert still has a coal heater. There were two buckets of coal and quite a bit of kindling there two weeks ago.

Note that the Bert Nichols (Windy Ridge) hut is still coal at this point in time. There is a large supply of firewood drying out at the moment but the new wood heater is not yet installed. The best advice for the coal heaters is make sure you clean them out thoroughly before you try to light them. There are still some walkers who seem to think the coal fires are a great place to dispose of rubbish.
