Overland track in mid May

Postby Luke001 » Sat 13 Feb, 2021 4:31 pm

We are thinking about booking a trip in mid May and just wondering if its a reasonable time to tackle the track?

Appreciate any suggestions.

Cheers, Luke.

Park Service (or at least the bean wing) seem to think so.
It will be generally colder, the only other given is the shorter days. Still, pleanty long enough to complete each day's usual distance.
Traditionally May would be a lot quieter but I doubt that now.

Thanks Nuts. I've booked it in, will just check weather before we head out and plan some alternates if it looks no good.

Much appreciated, Luke.

No problem. There is really no reason not to start out. You could pick up the pass and start a day or two later as a strategy I suppose.
A set of ice cleats (eg. Kahtoola or Grivel) help a lot with confidence on icey bits if the forecast is looking icey.

Too easy mate. I'll pack the microspikes. Thanks again. Luke.

Luke001 what date did you end up booking?

@matagi, @Luke001
BigBenny here, I found this thread. My friend and myself have just booked for Sat 22-May. It will be our first time doing the Overland Track. We will be flying into Launceston on Friday 21-May. Planning to reach Cynthia Bay on Friday 28-May, stay the night, and leave the next day, Sat 29-May back to Launceston to fly home.

I've contacted all of the coach companies, and most don't seem to have much availability in May, particularly on Saturdays.
How are you guys planning to get to Cradle Mountain and depart Lake St Clair?

We booked with Wilderness Expeditions Tasmania if anyone else is looking for transport on those dates.
