OLT five day itinerary

Postby Lightfooted » Sun 10 Mar, 2019 8:03 pm

Hi all,

My girlfriend and I are hiking the Overland Track, departing 23rd April and finishing on 27th April.

Noting that we are both young and fit, we are proposing the following itinerary:
Day 1: Ronny Creek to Waterfall Valley, with cradle mountain side trip
Day 2: Waterfall Valley to Windermere, with barn buff side trip
Day 3: Windermere to New Pelion
Day 4: New Pelion to Kia Ora, with Mt Ossa side trip
Day 5: Kia Ora to Narcissus with 15:45 ferry.

Any thoughts? Is this feasible? I realise the last day will be solid with an early start.
Naturally, the side trips are dependant on the weather.

Also, I am hoping to propose to her on this hike. Any recommendations as to where to do it?

Thanks in advance! :D

Looks pretty reasonable. First day is longer than you think, so start early if you plan to side trip to Cradle Mt. Kia Ora to Narcissus is not that bad - early start, as you say.

Top of Mt Ossa is a pretty special place to propose. But sunrise at New Pelion on the landing pad is also magic. Hope she says 'yes' :)

If you have cloudy weather on Day 2 (making a Barn Bluff sidetrip less than ideal), then it is possible to walk all the way from Waterfall Valley Hut through to Pelion especially if you're both fit. That way you could shorten the final day if you wanted, or walk out alongside Lake St Clair and save yourself paying for the ferry.

Yes, I have walked the same itinerary. Even the last day is not particularly difficult.

The top of Cradle Mountain would be a romantic spot.
By getting it in on the first day, you avoid the problem that you may not be on speaking terms by the end of the trip.

Unless she says no, in which case it could be a bit of a dampener.

Bit off topic but it amazes me how many/most people bypass Pine Valley/Labyrinth etc... it's the nicest part of the walk. (Acknowledge that the OP only has 5 days so the proposed itinerary is fine, just a more general comment).

Id have to agree with Fat Boy here. Labyrinth and Pine Valley are worth an extra day or two. Who knows when or if you will be back that way again ?
Lake Elysia worked for me when I popped the question. Not only did my wife say yes but I also earned extra brownie points for choosing such a beautiful location :D :D
Having said that, weather is going to be a big factor. If you happen to have a beautiful clear day and are surrounded by stunning mountain scenery I would suggest you chuck any plans out the window and just go for it if it feels right !!
Good luck and I hope it all goes well for both of you.

We had seven days and planned to do pine valley but didn’t have time....as our plan went out the door apart from finishing at the right time to meet our lift.
