Ironstone Mountain Track ?

Thu 29 Sep, 2016 12:07 am

Did a circuit through Mother Cummings Peak and Ironstone Mountain over two days, just wondering if anyone else has been up there recently ?

The track was very easy to follow for the most part but I couldn't find much of the Ironstone track after it splits from the Dell track. I followed it alongside the creek for a bit, decent pad, but after a while couldn't find more than hints of an old track - One tin lid track marker on the ground, an old pair of gloves, a few bits of whitened tape. Has it mostly grown over or are my navigational skills lacking ? I even crossed the creek right where "echo bridge" is marked, but there's nothing there. At the point it turns south west I found more pad, and by the approach to the summit there was track and cairns.

I'm just curious as some "off track" areas see a lot more track, cairns and tape, whereas this is clearly marked on the map. The descent from the other side of the plateau (Bastion Bluff) was much easier.

Also does anyone know what these falls are called ? They spill over a huge outcrop, big enough to camp in.

I remember the track being pretty vague once it hit the escarpment. We just made our way through pads in the scoparia until we could use the pine forests and boulders to hit the main scree run. We then found a cairned route up the scree.

I wouldn't think this track will be a priority for re-marking for PWS despite it being on a map. It is not exactly a heavily advertised walk. Perhaps a walking club may do it on a future visit though.

I think one of the guys in our club is planning a group walk there. If I'll remember I'll try and take some marking tape to mark the track, if it hasn't been done by then.

I did this circuit last season. Managed to follow the pad to the saddle below Ironstone despite it being a little vague. There were numerous animal pads that could easily take you in the wrong direction. It's a magical 2 day trip that could easily be extended to explore more of the area....no idea re the falls, I did notice a fire hearth on the rocky slab near it though...
