South Coast Track

Hi all,

I am planning to do a solo trip along the South Coast Track this coming January. For anyone who has completed this track, do you think it would be reasonably safe to tackle this trip alone?

In my opinion, if you are an experienced bushwalker, YES.

There will be many others on the track at that time.

I once met a walker while doing that track in Feb, he called it national highway for bushwalking during the peak season. Too many people. Not a single day goes by you don't see someone. However, the Port Davey is a lot less traffic. When I did it late Feb 2 years ago, we saw someone at the first camp site, no one else until we got to the boat crossing. The people we saw got there by sailing.

The only thing there I wouldn't look forward to doing on my own would be the man-handling of the boats at the New River Lagoon crossing. (That's been discussed on a recent thread here.)

However, as implied by other answers above: in January, if you wait a while, you will probably find that other parties wanting to do the same thing will arrive, so you should be able to share the work.

I went Jan 2016.

The track is generally well marked, though a couple of spots get a bit muddy (the turn off to Osmiridium beach for one, although it was definitely worth it). Water was very easy to locate, although some creeks were very low and sluggish so the water was very tannin-y. Treat water accordingly; we filtered the more suspicious looking places, and around campsites.

There was a bunch of traffic; one campsite was full about half way along. Had at least 12 people heading in the direction we were on the same day. It's not too bad, you tend to separate during the day and have the place pretty much to yourselves.

The boats could be interesting alone. One group had trouble when the wind picked up even with two rowers. You'd want to pick a calm time.

Also, on the day over the ironbounds - leave early. It's a very long descent if you're heading west to east.
