Hi everyone,

A friend and I are planning a 5 day, 78klm return walk to Mt Scorpio on the Western Arthurs via the Huon and McKays tracks.

I have John Chapmans SW Book notes but would also love some first hand accounts...

Any particular reason why you'd choose that specific route?
By all accounts I wouldn't be rushing to do the Huon track, aka the yoyo track...
Would be much easier to go from Scotts Pk return.

Why Mt scorpio? as opposed to traversing the entire range?

Seems a rather stange yet specific itinerary.

I've walked out from the W. Arthurs along the Huon Track, and I've got to say it's not something I'd repeat. 1.5 days of up/down hills along a 4wd track that was covered with fallen trees that were all remarkably at about chest height, making them awkward to climb over or go under...

I'd agree with the Aarons - from Scotts Peak return would be much nicer / quicker if you want to access this part of the range.
Are you going in with Mike? If you are keen to do Scorpio then staying at Promontory Lake would be ideal, as Carina Peak is also then very close (like an hour return), which is about (apart from Mt. Shaula) the only peak Mike missed on our traverse of the range with him in 2007.
From Prom Lake as a day trip you could also continue on past Mt. Scorpio & do Mt. Aldebaran & even Mt. Taurus, lunching at Haven Lake?
A great area, but I agree, a very specific plan? Why Scorpio in particular?
Other options could be to go to Lake Oberon return from Scotts Peak along the traverse track, a very casual 5 day'er.
If you wanted a specific mission from the Yo-Yo end you'd be better off staying at Lake Roseanne & doing West Portal?

After considering the plan further and talking to Stu we have decided on Scotts Peak as the starting point...

Had no particular reason for Huon and McKays tracks with Mt Scorpio beyond it being there!

Time to tighten the boots!

I'm surprised how negative many walkers are about the Huon Track. I went in to Federation Pk on the Huon track last month and was expecting the worst but I really enjoyed the walk in. Where the occasional log has fallen, new detours are being made by regular use so they are not a great problem. I have not been on the McKays track yet so I can't compare the two. Maybe it is a case of expect the worst and it is never that bad.

Enjoy your walk Fizzygood. I hope the conditions are good for more great photos from that area.

It could be that I had just come off the back of a gruelling 5 day traverse of the W. Arthurs, and was in no mood for it...

It was back in 1997, so the fallen tree conditions could have been much worse, I don't know.
