LISTmap and Android

Hi all,

not sure if this is the right place to post this, but if you have an Android device, you might be interested in having LISTmap in your hand while you're out and about!

If you don't have the (free) Orux Maps app, you really should, it's pretty amazing. It's the most fully featured mapping app I've been able to find for Android, and I've done a lot of looking!

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... x.oruxmaps

Instructions:
1. Install the app
2. Once you've installed the app, navigate to the "orux maps\mapfiles\" folder and locate the file "wms_services.xml". Edit the file as following:

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<wms_services>

   <wms>
      <name>LIST Photo</name>
      <uid>179</uid>
      <desc>LIST Photo</desc>
      <minzoomlevel>5</minzoomlevel>
      <maxzoomlevel>20</maxzoomlevel>
      <url>http://services.thelist.tas.gov.au/arcgis/services/Basemaps/Orthophoto/ImageServer/WMSServer?</url>
      <format>image/png</format>
      <coordinatesystem>EPSG:4326</coordinatesystem>
      <version>1.1.1</version>
   </wms>

   <wms>
      <name>LIST Topo</name>
      <uid>123</uid>
      <desc>LIST Topo</desc>
      <minzoomlevel>5</minzoomlevel>
      <maxzoomlevel>20</maxzoomlevel>
      <url>http://services.thelist.tas.gov.au/arcgis/services/Basemaps/Topographic/ImageServer/WMSServer?</url>
      <format>image/png</format>
      <coordinatesystem>EPSG:4326</coordinatesystem>
      <version>1.1.1</version>
   </wms>

   <wms>
      <name>LIST Scanned</name>
      <uid>199</uid>
      <desc>LIST Scanned</desc>
      <url>http://services.thelist.tas.gov.au/arcgis/services/Basemaps/TasmapRaster/ImageServer/WMSServer?</url>
      <minzoomlevel>5</minzoomlevel>
      <maxzoomlevel>20</maxzoomlevel>
      <format>image/png</format>
      <coordinatesystem>EPSG:4326</coordinatesystem>
      <version>1.1.1</version>
   </wms>

</wms_services>

3. Launch the app, and select the MAP icon in the top right corner
4. Select "Online" tab
5. Hit the refresh button
6. You should see the three WMS:LIST maps available in the selection screen.

Happy mapping!

Where do I get myself another 30 new members like you?

Great post!

Almost enough to get me to exchange my iPhone for an Android device.
Almost . . .

I find that you need one of each! :D :D

Am I missing a step? As I can not edit the xml file.

Re: LISTmap and Android

Mon 19 May, 2014 10:18 pm

You might not be able to directly edit the file on your phone. Copy the file contents above to a new file and save as "wms_services.xml". Drag-and-drop into the folder, and select "overwrite". That should get you going :)

I can go one better! If you want 3D maps (see screenshot), then DEM (digital elevation model) data for Australia is available in .hgt format here:
http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1/SRTM3/Australia/
It has around 90m resolution.

Download all the files that are required to cover Tasmania, and extract them to the folder "orux maps/dem/"

To view any map overlaid on the 3D data, select "3D" from the "Map" menu.

If you put the files on your external SD card (they're about 100MB) then you'll need to tell Orux Maps where they are stored (see third screenshot).

To determine which data you need to cover Tasmania, reference image is here:

My first response would be "Nope, no idea how to do that." But where would we be if we let such limitations dictate our lives? I did a little bit of research, and here's what I've come up with.

(BTW, these instructions should support the following formats)
Garmin
Magellan
OziExplorer
OruxMaps Offline
TomTom
TrekBuddy

(and other, more obscure, formats)

Disclaimer: I have no idea how this matches up with the T&C of LISTMap. If someone here knows more about this, and this violates the usage policy for LIST, I'll happily take it down.

1. Download MobAC (Mobile Atlas Creator) - from http://mobac.sourceforge.net/ (scroll down to the "Download" page)

2. Extract MobAC somewhere on your computer

3. Open up the directory, and you should see a folder called "mapsources" - see image

mobacFolder.png

4. Extract the attached file (mapsources.zip) into the "mapsources" directory. It contains an .xml file for each of the LISTmap types (Topo, Photo, Scanned). You should see those three files as follows:

mapsources.png

5. Run "Mobile Atlas Creator.exe"

6. Select your Atlas type (in your case it will probably be Garmin Custom Map).

7. Zoom in to Tasmania (otherwise when you switch map type, you won't be able to see anything).

mobac.png

8. Switch the map type (in the upper left corner) to whichever LIST source you would like to use (example below)

list.png

9. Now you can create your offline atlas. Have a bit of a play around with the software to figure out all the options, but you should be able to get it all working!

Also, I just discovered this little gem:

If you create a single-zoom-level ATLAS in the "Garmin Custom Maps" format, it will save a .kmz file that you can open DIRECTLY with Google Earth, and view as an overview... Pretty cool.

Thank you so much!

I'll have to test this when I get home, but you should be able to open the KMZ in basecamp and upload it directly to the GPS (think there is a 1 megapixel limit per image, so it depend on if the kmz is made up of the original tile sizes or not).

For all the iPhone users out there:

http://galileo-app.com

You can create an offline map straight from MobAC that will work on your phone.

Awesome; orux downloaded aok, and already has openstreetmap on it :-)
If I edit the xml file, will osm dissappear?

I don't think it will disappear, but make a backup of the wms file just on case :)

WHAT attached file? There's nothing like that showing up on my download.

You're talking to a cybercretin here. Which post and which file?
I'm not doing the phone thing here, this is the MobAC thing I'm trying to get running on my laptop.

edit: Sorry, I just found it. Thank you.
Second edit: Think it's set up now. Thank you again and again from the bottom of my heart.

Re: LISTmap and Android

Mon 26 May, 2014 10:31 am

This is annoying.
I have it up and running on the laptop and was hoping to be able to use it on the Mac, but when I try to run the .exe file, it says no go 'because Windows applications are not supported by OS X' - yet the MobAC site says it's a universal version that should run on all operating systems, including . . . yes, that's right: OS X.

Oh well, it was fun trying.

http://mobac.sourceforge.net/quickstart/install.htm Have a look on here, it might get you up and running

Re: LISTmap and Android

Well, that was a lot of messing about - including having to install JDK - but it's now up and running. Thank you. You may be a rapscallion, but you're an awfully nice and helpful one.

For the NSW people here, this is the xml file to get a copy of the six maps on your phone/gps.

On, ant to get it to work with garmin, you need to sex the max tile size at 1mb, then copy it into the custom map directory. It's slow to render.

for Andriod I use OziExplorer+Tasmaps files (ozfx3,_ozf)..works perfectly..No calibration required, just upload the files and away you go.

For iphone i still use map n trax, but you need you overlay jpg in google earth, and then calibrate using MAPC2MAPC64.
It pretty awesome, just takes a time.

I wonder, how the oruxmap cache works for the listmap tiles, so are they available when phone's offline?

Re: LISTmap and Android

Thu 01 Jan, 2015 12:25 pm

I think that Orux itself has facility for creating an offline cache, that might work with the LIST map source.
