Dry October

Its been a record breaking October for lack of rainfall,the state-average rainfall for the month was 20.6 millimetres - one-sixth of the long-term average with sixty-eight sites around Tasmania notched up record lowest October rainfalls. Launceston for example had only 0.6 mm for the month. Just wondering whether those on this forum walking in our bush at the moment are seeing worrying river and lake levels for this time of year.

I've been into areas I last saw in February, and they are drier now than they were then. If the summer is as wet as last year's it won't be so bad, but if it stays dry we're going to be in for a tough season.

Went up to Mt Gould, Guardians, Labyrinth, area last weekend and it was very dry. The ants didn't seem to mind though, lots of those!
I've been up there a few times and have never seen it like that. Oddly enough there was still big snow drifts left up on the Ducane Range and lost of melt water in that area still.

Dry is often associated with cold. That would also keep the snow around a bit longer.
The Vic Alps and Kosci have lost almost all of their snow though.
They were still skiing on Bogong early October.. nothing much left now.
A local was noting that Dartmouth Dam is way down for this time of year.

All the Tasmanian impoundments are well below normal levels. I think Hydro were saying the average storage is currently at 29%.

In Australia, the main killer of snow is rain. Warm rain melts away the snow much faster than a sunny day.
That's probably why they are still there so late in the season.
I did build a cute snowman from snow at a drift near Mt Howitt, that I'd carried all the way to Vallejo Gantner hut last weekend though. So cute.
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.
