Family walk suggestions

Wed 30 Dec, 2015 2:01 pm

Hi Folks
We are a couple of families, 50 something parents and teenage kids
planning to walk in to Lake Oberon in mid January.
In our youth we have all done the Arthurs numbers of times and now want to introduce our children.
We are all experienced walkers with many long distance and high altitude walks around the world over the years.

However the weather has been unsettled so far this summer with 80-100km+ winds on several days
so we are looking for some alternatives if the forecasts are particularly bad.
We have done trips to the Blue Peaks, the Walls and the Overland
so we are looking for some other suggestions of about 5 days duration, not too exposed
and not too hard.
Of course if the weather is particularly bad we will head off to the east coast.

Can the walk to Lake Rhona be extended onto the Denison range for a few days?
Any other suggestions???
Thanks with appreciation
John

Can the walk to Lake Rhona be extended onto the Denison range for a few days?

I haven't been anywhere near it but it looks like Lake Rhona would be a decent base camp location or starting point for Denison Range. There is mention of a much longer trip covering King William, Denison and The Spires. Exit point might be difficult without a car shuffle though.

Frenchmans Cap? It is exposed up in the higher areas, but the actual walk itself is not too difficult for Tasmanian standards.
When you walked the Overland, did you go up to Pine Valley? That would also be a pretty nice place to spend a few days.

If the weather is bad or has been recently bad - be careful about Lake Rhona as an option.
If there is heavy rainfall the Gordon River is known to flood, even though there is a log cross it can go underwater and its a mighty scary river in flood.
Something to be mindful of as plenty of people have got stuck and needed picking up by the helicopter, because they didn't have enough food to sit it out.

Lake Rhona is a good base for exploring the range, there is a couple of days worth there.
Mentions of longer trips through to the King William Range or the Spires are not casual considerations. Completely off track and very very hard trips.

Thanks for the suggestions folks
Hopefully the weather will good enough for the Arthurs
Pity to hear elsewhere on the site that Lake Rhona is developing a litter problem.
