I'm after times to do Mt Pillinger as a side trip off the Arm River Track, any ideas?

Hey mate,

the Pillinger walk takes about 1.5 hours return from memory.
It is shown in Chapmans CM-LSC & WOJ NP guide, which lists the time at 2 hours return.

There is a good little track (ie. track rather than faint pad as described in the guide) to the summit & the start of the track is easy to find
(it branches off the 'alternative / bypass Lake Price' section of the Arm River track).

Great views over the Mersey River valley / Lees paddocks area & a different perspective on the Pelion Peaks.
A worthwhile little side-trip to be sure

Don't have Chapman's book, probably worthwhile gettin though.
Hoping to do Oakleigh on the way in and Pillinger on the way out - or vice versa - depends on what others in the group are doing and start times etc

Took me 3 hours to do Pillinger and "the loop" on the way out a couple of years ago. Good track up Pillinger. Pretty easy to find the start just past the lake.

There is a lovely & quicker access to Pillinger along the Valley marked by the arrow below.
There is a clear track all the way up this from the end of the road at 308 722, which you get to from the Arm River road easily following the map.
From the road the track sidles around the hill.
Once crossing a creek there is a junction. Don't follow the track up the creek to Lake McCoy, but keep sidling.
The actual climb on the hill is far less than the Arm River climb too, so its much quicker,
although its rougher & narrower than the more common route.

When are you doing this? If you open to people joining you, even if only for Pillinger, I'd be interested.

Agree with above. Walked into Pillinger via this route a few weeks back...pretty easy walking to the ART turn off. The start point is at the end of Maggs Spur Road 17/2....which is 150m plus higher than the ART start...so avoids the rather steep zig zag section.

Was planning to go Thurs or Fri as part of day 1 of a 5 day Pelion circuit walk.
This is however on hold due to a dodgy forecast during this period.
Will be reassessing Wednesday as to go or whoa. Will go in mid to late April if this doesn't happen this week.

I've heard rumours that the track from ART to Pillinger has been removed. Does anyone know any details of this? Wanting to take the family up here later this year.

I went up last year to look at the track but it was under a few meters of snow! (Very pretty).

Not sure how you could 'remove' it. If PWS has done something to disguise the track this is the first I have heard of it.
I have been in twice since I started this thread via the ART and Maggs, and the sidetrack is quite obvious(without snow).

There's a pile of branches over the turnoff..

Yer, it's been there a long time, likely to encourage use of the new route around Lk Price since that went in. The old route is pretty overgrown at the start so I guess it's working. Most people I know don't use either these days..

I've done it quite a few times but not in the last year. Perhaps PWS want to make it a single track rather than a circuit. I'll probably do the walk in December and I'll repost on the track condition. Thanks!

Ok, if it is something recent, a sign or more rehab (unlikely) I haven't heard either.
