Belvoir Rd to Cradle Mtn Road - suitable for novices?

Postby Son of a Beach » Wed 25 Aug, 2021 2:11 pm

I've not done any of the Penguin to Cradle track. I'm planning a camp for a moderately large group of kids, most of whom haven't ever bushwalked before.

It's very difficult to find suitable locations for this (see: https://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... 09#p422709 ).

After scanning the map, I noticed that the section of the P to C track from Belvoir Road to Cradle Road looks about the right distance (although towards the top end!), camping at either Fourways or Pandani Grove.

However, I'm also aware that parts of this track are challenging, and sometimes some parts need maintenance, etc.

Could people familiar with this section of track let me know anything about it? Anything at all?

In particular:

How easy/hard is it?
How steep/flat?
How long did it take to walk?
How much camping space is available at Fourways and Pandani Grove camp sites?

Of course, if it sounded like it might be feasible, I would walk it myself beforehand, to make sure (and to become familiar with it as a leader).

A forums member has just kindly sent me some track notes. The distances and times look about right for this group.

I just have to get a better idea of the difficulty, the camp sites' capacities, and consider the toilet options (we may need to dig a single large pit for this group, and obviously that can be an irresponsible - or impossible - thing to do in some locations!).

Pandani Grove camp is tiny - only enough room for two tents.
Fourways has room for about 3, possibly 4 from memory.

OK thanks. May not be feasible then. :-(

I might go check it out anyhow. Good excuse for a short walk.

Hey Nik,

I applaud your perseverance! Thanks for all you do for the kids.

I suspect Lees Paddocks may well be the best option, if you can get permission and work out the toilet thing. Is there still a toilet seat & crate there that can be set up over a hole? maybe you could even take in a light weight 'toilet tent' to put around it?

I'll keep thinking.

Yes, for either of these locations, I think we would need both a toilet seat and a toilet tent (and a solid shovel). As for any organisation, we have to allow for such privacy to avoid any possibility (or even suspicion) of impropriety.

But somebody has to carry it all. I can guess who that might be. Hopefully with some help though.

If we went to Lees, We would stay away from the hut (wouldn’t even let them know there is a hut).

Well I found a video that shows both camp sites, and it looks like neither have enough space for a group of our size.

I have another idea to check out, and plan to do a reccie trip next week to see if it could work.
