Does that track still exist?

Postby north-north-west » Fri 29 Oct, 2021 1:08 pm

There was a question about the Shinglebend Track earlier this year. Now there are two I want to know about: the northern track up Quamby Bluff, and the Dell Track in the Meander area, between Split Rock and Stone Hut Tracks.
Still exist? Still navigable (without machete)? Anyone done them recently? Anyone done them in living memory?

Went across Dell Track from Ironstone Track to Stone Hut Track last week. It was easy walking and marked with tape but a bit difficult to follow in places. Did not do section to Split Rock Track but it looked as though it was continuing in similar intermittent condition.

I did a short stretch of the Dell track on the way up to Bastion Bluff.
It was a bit messy, sections of mud, braided with random tapes and cairns. I remember the various junctions being quite clearly marked. I doubt it would pose much of an issue for you...
I did get a bit off track on the way back, wandered off on one of the random braids - knowing the track was 10-20m somewhere off to the right - eventually wandered back onto it.

Don't know where that sign was, but if it was on the Stone Hut Track, it's not there any more. I doubt the tree stump is either.
I checked every lead I could see for at least 100m either side of where the maps say it heads south from the Stone Hut Track. Everything just petered out in to scrub.

Sign is on Dell Track in the middle of a wet area where the route (tape marked sometimes) to Bastion Bluff starts.
I lifted it from the creek into the tree a couple of weeks ago.

Sorry submitted too early.
The Stone hut track meets the Dell track at a T junction with two separated signs. The Dell track is as mentioned by Azza is a bit wet and messy but can be found about 5 metres from a sign marking the end of the Stone Hut Track. When you locate it there is another sign on the Dell track like the one in Azza photo.

I went down from Bastion Bluff via the rock chute and followed the markers and cairns down the Stone Hut Track to the Croft Track (Bastion Cascades), which was the only sign I saw.

Will have another look from the Split Rock side next time it's convenient. There was a sign at that junction last time I was there although it must be ten years ago.

I hiked the Dell track to Dell creek and then turned north and followed it east the mother Cummings track.
It got hard to follow approaching the creek and again on the down hill section when it veers away from the creek.
The rest is fine. Make sure you check out Bastion cascades. Hike was 3 weeks ago.

From the Split Rock Track, ie starting at the Meander Falls carpark? Because everyone else here is talking about the northern section and it's the southern stretch between Split Rock and Stone Hut Tracks I'm interested in.
I did the Bastion Cascades loop, but it's not part of what I'm asking about.

I walked up Quamby Bluff today via the main track, from the trig. point I looked for a track to the North but all the leads petered out. I could see a large cairn lower down but the scrub has grown over any track that used to exist. Upon returning to the car I drove back to Brodies Road from which the track used to run, near the end of Brodies there are a couple of signs saying Private this is not the Quamby track. So it looks like the Northern track is no longer used.

Thanks, teak. I feared it would be like that.

Walked up to Bastion Bluff from Quarry road via Stone Hut and the Dell today.Came across a very recent helicopter drop of boardwalk and track marking stakes, approximately 1km before the scree chute,on the muddy section after coming out of the forest.Thought it strange they would be doing any track work up in the Dell?
