Flowers of Nothofagus cunninghamii (Myrtle) & gunnii (Fagus)

Postby Son of a Beach » Fri 14 Apr, 2023 1:16 pm

I’ve not noticed the flowers of Myrtle trees (Nothofagus cumminghamii) before, probably due to the subdued colouring, but the flowers are prolific and quite pretty.

These pictures are from this week on the way up Little Hugel (but with a crappy phone camera that couldn't focus close enough to get any really good shots).

Even with a good macro lens, they're hard to photograph.

Thanks NNW... nice pics (and way better than my phone-camera shots!)

Are they gunnii or cunninghamii? The shape, structure and distribution of the leaves look more like gunnii to me. but it's a bit difficult to be sure, at that scale.

(I've changed the title of the topic, to cover both, in any case.)

It's N cunninghamii, but weather pruned. Both are up there, but only the cunninghamii was flowering at that time. The King Billies were also at it.
