20m drop and very lucky to be alive. Amazed that he actually managed to climb back out by himself.

Very lucky. A Joe Simpson moment - have you read or seen the documentary Touching the Void?

I have not but will read about it. I get the impression that high altitude mountaineers really have a different mind set. Incredible stuff.

Simpson's story will put this incident into perspective.

I found the book so harrowing that I've never been able to watch the documentary.

Aslo interesting to note from this news report implies that he was able request assistance using Facebook.

Just read the synopsis on Wiki of the story. Luck and strength was on his side.

I think he requested assistance by satellite messenger, could have been a yellowbrick or similar or he would have just pressed the SOS button on a Delorme. You can route messages from these devices to email, facebook, twitter etc.

Edit. Actually it was a delorme. wonder why he didn't SOS. :?

Foreign country and a lack of faith in local rescue services perhaps? With his family and friends aware of his situation, they could may have been able push authorities harder for results if necessary.

Found it on the linked page above. He was using Global Rescue, a subscription based worldwide rescue service.

I thought that too, but it's just an ad for Delorme. I have an Inreach myself, and know that it has the capability, but read the story on News.com and he quite clearly says he used Facebook to post a request for help.

Hmmm - an Inreach SE does provide access to Facebook. But why didn't he use the SOS button?

Because he has a subscription to Global Rescue?

GEOS will activate the local rescue response by default. If you want Global Rescue, you contact them direct.

Surely he sent more than just "SOS".

No what he meant was why didn't he hit the SOS button on the inReach?
It has a designated SOS button.
Having an inReach myself I was wondering the same thing.
He could've done that as well as send off a Facebook message.

Photohiker spotted the reason. He's a Global Rescue member.
