stewart island is a mixed bag, tracks like the north west circuit have a LOT of mud..... but very scenic place.. if you're going in summer book any transport and accomodation you need in advance. i booked at the last minute, got the last seat on the boat over and last seat on the plane back,,, both experiences were great... there was no accomodation vacancy...... so just went for the day...
hump ridge track is to the west of invercargill.... in fiordland, the catlins between Dunedin and invercargill are very scenic...
if theres any wind, which there should be, head to the albatross colony in dunedin at the head of the harbour, if you havent seen an albatross soar effortlessly on the wind you havent lived.....
theres various walks around the hills of dunedin
not much around invercargill, except a wetland walk.
if you're going north from invercargill. better to head to manapouri or te anau... theres the dusky further south but, theres an awful lot of deep mud on that track... ven by tasmanian standards
