Climb Mulhacen in Spain

Postby paul8 » Wed 17 May, 2017 4:01 am

1. I understand the road from Capileira to Hoya del Portillo is not a good road. Can a 2-wheel-drive car be able to go from Capileira to Hoya del Portillo ?
2. How long does it take to climb to the summit of Mulhacen from Hoya del Portillo ?
3. How long does it take to climb to the summit of Mulhacen from Trevelez ?
Thanks for looking into these questions.
Paul
PS. I intened to climb this mountain in mid-June

I have climbed Mulhacen Peak.It was a lung buster. I did it with a guided small group . We went up from the Refugio as a day trip.We copped some bad weather, including rain , hail and snow in June. I did this trek with a trekking firm that specializes in trekking in that part of Spain. My report should be somewhere in the bowels of this forum.

I've since climbed Mulhacen in Spain and forgot to answer my questions :D
1. Can a 2-wheel-drive car be able to go from Capileira to Hoya del Portillo ?
Ans: As at 2017, the year I did the trip - At places, the road was a little rough with pot holes, but perfectly ok for a 2WD.

2. How long does it take to climb to the summit of Mulhacen from Hoya del Portillo ?
Ans: 10 hours should be sufficient.

3. How long does it take to climb to the summit of Mulhacen from Trevelez ?
Ans: Slightly longer ... but also around 10-hour type ballpark, maybe 11 hrs.

The 4 WD tracks above the tree line are closed to the public up there.

Correct.

Private cars are stopped at a locked gate at Hoya del Portillo.
