Appalachian Trail Extended?

Is this proposed extension of the Appalachian trail visionary or just plain insanity? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/f ... 828574.stm

I'd love to see a circuit track- taking in Canada and the Deep Douth/Texas, linking up the PCT and AT. Not that I'd do it.....

When you experience the vast amount of effort put in by the volunteers who build & maintain the 3500km of the AT it is hard to imagine that such a long trail could possibly work........... it is a very cool idea though, to follow the geology around the planet !

I thought that about 40 miles south of Katadyn (sp?) there is a junction in the track that takes the track up into Canada for several hundred more miles. I've seen it called the Canadian Appalachian Trail, but apparently the Americans aren't all that interested in it as its not American.

I was told about it by a Canadian in NZ last year, haven't had a chance to check out the info yet

I could easily see out the rest of my days doing that....3 years for a round trip you reckon?
