Hi Otrekker

After a bit of reading I have decided to walk the Alta AV1 trail in the Dolomites this July (2012). I bought the Cicerone Press guide. The walk is about 120 klm over 12 days. It only has two sections of grade 3 at least one can be bypassed.
I have also come across this free guide (Atra AV1) that you can download. It might be usefuil to anybody intrested in the Dolimites. :D

Cheers

I've spent a little time in the region... I particularly liked the Miramonti Hotel in Cortina... lovely town, great food, friendly people. Only been in winter.

I'm jealous... sounds like a great trip planned.

I thought I should share a few pictures of the walk we undertook last year (2012) on AV1 through the Italian Dolomite's.
Many of the Refugio are owned by the Italian Alpine Club and I booked them and the private huts on line before we left Australia.
I used Google translate and sent my requests in both English and Italian and it worked very well.
The weather was a bit warmer than the Tour of Mt Blanc and also quite a bit rocky.
I highly recommend this walk.

rwfox, thanks for sharing those photos.
I'll be staying in Selva in mid to late August before heading to Mont Blanc.
So looking forward to those via ferratas before moving to the bigger stuff.

Puts Tassie's "mountains" to shame doesn't it. Amazing scenery!

Hi roysta

If you own your via ferrata gear you need to check out the warnings. There has just been a second recall on via ferrata gear in Europe, that's two in the last six months. You will need to goggle your model etc to check out the recalled models.
Have good holiday :)

Thanks mate, I was aware of the recalls. http://theuiaa.org/upload_area/files/1/ ... _final.pdf
I have the Black Diamond Easy Rider.

This is what the BD website says ........
Via ferrata sets from several companies have recently been involved in a series of recalls due to safety concerns.
Both of Black Diamond Equipment’s via ferrata sets Easy Rider and Iron Cruiser:
• are not included in any recalls.
• meet all CE & UIAA requirements for via ferrata.
• may continue to be used with confidence.

Where will you be staying ? Usually vineyards are never far away from great walking countryside and mountains (except Bordeaux maybe, which is 3 hours from the Pyrénées and the Massif Central), including some that are highly underestimated and ignored by tourists (the Cévennes for example).

Just make sure on that Patagonia trip that you get to Mendoza, Argentina.
If you like wine, you will LOVE this place.
