That's correct GregR, we had just left the summit of Snowdon. Because the weather was idyllic, there was a massive queue for the summit. And yet, leaving the summit heading south on the Rhyd Ddu path, there was no-one else, as they had all come from the north, west or east. Our "coast-to-coast" walk was 46km from Caernarfon to Penrhyndrudaeth, where we arrived after dark and at low tide, which was rather unsatisfactory as we were unable to touch the water which was a looooong way out but we did identify the high tide mark.

Thanks GregR.

What is it with summit cairns, that they need to build them so big? This one is in the UK.

No it's not Snowdon, GregR, although Snowdon also has an absurdly large summit cairn.

Yes, it is Scafell Pike. How do they even decide the height of this mountain when the summit is hidden under a cairn this big?

This chapter is standing on the summit of what peak in the UK and is happy about the thought of the beet waiting for him at what pub?

I don't know many pubs in the UK that advertise Beet as their main feature, however, I'm going to guess you're on Scoat Fell and about to amble down to the Wasdale Head Pub for a pint with a beet chaser.

Haha, beet beer - tastes ok but stains your teeth that lurid red colour. But sorry no, it was a typo. And no it is not Scoat Fell but you are in the right part of the world and I think you would be able to see Scoat Fell from where this chap is standing provided you hadn't been getting into the local beet beer.

Well I'll move a minimal distance as it sure looks like Wast Water thru the gap- those cliffs sure look like the side of Illgil Head, so I still reckon Iv'e got the Pub right, depite your lack of assusrance, So_ I will go with Red Pike.

Greg, those are not the Illgill Head cliffs, I'm not on Red Pike, I'm not heading for the Wasdale Head pub. That body of water behind me is not Wastwater but I now realise there is a connection between my earlier typo and the name
of the colour of the water in the tarn despite its blue appearance.

I might retire to the fireplace and have a lovely English Beet.

In cricket parlance...I'm retiring hurt.

Seriously? You can't quit after only three rongs, I'm sure there's something in the rules about it, we are not playing *&%$#! baseball.... ah yes, cricket you said. Even so, you need to look to the ENE from that area around Red Pike or more specifically Scafell Pike , more than just a few miles, I could definitely see Scafell easily from where I was standing.

Don't worry GregR, I also convinced myself that it was Red Pike.

Can we at least agree that the pub you're heading to is the Old Dungeon Ghyll?

Your "clue" about the name of the colour of the water made me suspect Red Tarn near Pike of Blisco, but nothing else about it matches.

Instead, I think the water in your photo is Angle Tarn. Are you perhaps on Harrison Stickle?

[edit: I meant to say Stickle Tarn, not Angle Tarn]

Heck, there are now two votes for Red Pike, I started to have serious self-doubts for a moment but no, it is not Red Pike despite the obvious similarities in terrain.... Ribuck: sorry but no, we unfortunately can't agree that it is the Old Dungeon Ghyll pub we are heading to, but thanks for the recommendation, I will keep it in mind. Also, alerted by your comment I now know there are two Red Tarns in the lake dustrict and they are about 13 kms apart and no, I am not standing on Harrison Stickle, whoever he may be. GregR: please peek out from under that paper bag at this picture which was taken from the same spot as the first one but looking more to the photographers left, it might provide inspiration.

Eggs, you have indeed landed on the spot where I was standing - the summit of Helvellyn, from whence you should be able work out the name of the pub I was heading to?

We drove through the northern part of Lakes District on a typical summers day  [pouring rain so you could hardly see the road]
Afraid I am not savvy on the appropriate local watering points.
The Coach House and the Kings Head Inn are closest on one side [steep] and White Lion and Travellers Rest on the other [not so steep]??
