It reminds me a lot of the valley to the west of Landmannalauger, past the lava field. I suspect you are not actually on the Landmannalauger trail itself but one of the many days walks in the area.

I witnessed v. similar scenes at Tongariro Crossing

Correct keithj, its the Tongariro Alpine Crossing at Tongariro NP.

Generally I like NZs more relaxed policy on safety closures but I do think exceptions for high visit areas frequented by non walkers and tourists should be made.

There was a big non enforceable sign saying 'Not Reccomended Today" at the carpark but that didn't seem to stop the 100s of day walkers. Above 1600m, it was below zero, snow on the ground, winds were 60-70km/h+ and visibility was under 10m. I saw day walkers in shorts, hands and faces flushed bright red from the cold and and caught one couple wandering lost in fog 30 metres to the side of the marked route. A person died up there in similar weather only two weeks before.

I was coming from the opposite direction, doing the 4 day Northern Circuit. Even with suitable clothing and gear it was a scary experience.

Over to you keithj

:D I too was going the opposite way - only one group (out of 100's) appeared to be having fun.

I'm away for a few days, so anyone can have a go.

Not too far away. As I understand it this scene looks a bit different these days.

Continuing the process of elimination.

Hollyford?

Dart?

Where is wayno when you need him

I'll go with Dart, cause you might have crossed to the other side to do the beans burn or similar.

The Dart had a big landslip

Dart is correct, although I was still on the true left (looking downstream towards Sandy Bluff). I believe the landslip mentioned by Eggs has inundated much of the scene in the picture and the R-D track re-routed accordingly?

So you are. Would have helped if Id orientated my map.

Yes there was significant track work done and the route now climbs quite high up the bluffs. You definitely notice its new because they have safety rails, warning signs (about the severe danger of a cliff edge..) and all the other things required these days.

I’ll hunt around for another image this evening. In the meantime, if anyone has an image they want to post to keep things moving feel free.

Also in NZ.

I'm after the name of the feature (mountain) in the distance.

Not quite. Not to far away though..

A big clue would be my previous images. I haven't been to that many places in NZ.
