Wowsers. Thank you. Fair bit of water in the creek.

This should also be fairly easy, although I want the same degree of accuracy.

Well, you could get there by continuing along here, but it is not any of the usual routes. Though I was looking at the terrain and wondering if it would be possible.

Yes. It's a lovely ridge and surprisingly easy walking. Would be fun to go all the way down to Huntley and also to go across to Farquhars Lookout from there.

Much closer to civilisation and a long way north - but still a very wild place.
The rock types are a clue.

Too far north. The rock types are granite and a purply conglomerate.

This looks like the west coast, north west (takayna) in fact, but I can't recall anything quite like that big dark rock in any of the stretches I've walked, which is Macquarie Heads to Arthur River and bits to the north.

Getting closer - keep moving south. The big dark rock is a pink/purply conglomerate - only occurs in one place in Tas.

Much closer - but this is a short walk from the end of a road. Further along I went up a gully and found an old gold stamping battery.

Some of the clues sound like around Trial Harbour although I only know of that type conglomerate on the west coast range, particularly the Tyndalls?

Correct Last. This is walking at Trial Harbour along the base of the escarpment where there is a lot of granite outcropping.
But the Amos - Heemskirk complex just east from there I consider as part of the conglomerate band that makes up the West Coast Range.
The block in view was probably brought down from up on those peaks.

I wish to register a complaint.

north-north-west wrote:... which is Macquarie Heads to Arthur River...

eggs wrote:Getting closer - keep moving south.

Trial Harbour is between Macquarie Heads and the Pieman River, which also means between the heads and Arthur River. Yes, sure I also said takayna, but I interpreted your response to mean south of what I'd walked, not south of takayna. Your clues and my brain do not work well together. :(

Thanks eggs

I did wonder about that NNW.

I have only limited very interested amateur geology knowledge but the tops of Agnew, Heemskirk and around lake Cumberland are granite. I can't say I've seen conglomerate there. I'll look at my geology books/maps

Sorry NNW - I fixated on your "north west" and missed the reference to Macquarie Heads. Arthur River I am yet to get to.
And you are obviously correct about the granite tops. The block is clearly the West Coast Range conglomerate. I will have to get back to find out if there are bands of it underlying the granite. But some blocks have been distributed a fair way from the range.

That looks one whole lot like Heemskirk from Agnew. Or maybe it's just the weather that looks familiar.

One of things that put my thoughts in that area was the third rock, the greyish mudstone. A lot of the base visible strata all the way up the coast is that stuff. It can get involved in some really fantastic formations.
The granite is interesting. The belt running down the east coast is well known, but fewer people know about what's on the west. It's like the belt split into an inverted Y shape south of the Prom.

That's correct NNW. Do they have another kind of weather over there?

Yes Eggs the west coast conglomerate has been well distributed. The Leven river is full of it for example. The scale of the deposit is also amazing. A couple of Km thick in places and stretching from St Valentines peak to at least Mt Sorell. It's hard to imagine the processes that led to it's formation

On my last two visits I had more sunshine than cloud and was rained on only once. Plenty of rain around, just mostly a little bit away from me. Made me doubt my own sanity (well, in different ways to the usual).

Granite Creek Climies Track, the memorial is for three riders who died when swept away crossing the creek.

Indeed. They should have used the bridge.
That crossing is rough as guts even when the water levels are low. Very dangerous when the creek is running high.
