GAME: Where am I?

How well do you know Tasmania?

Here is a little forum game called "Where am I". All you have to do is guess where I am standing to take the picture below - i.e. name the thing I'm standing on, not the thing I'm looking at. First to guess the right location gets to post the next picture of a location somewhere in Tasmania. It doesn't need to be a stitched panorama either. You can use any picture with enough visual clues to allow players to work out where the picture was taken. Players can ask questions and the picture owner can give clues. If you guess correctly but don't wish to post a picture, then just give your turn to someone else.

    Game Rules
The GAME RULES now have there own Wiki page.

    Game Indexes
The 2009 Game Index for all images posting in 2009, is now available on the wiki.
The 2010 Game Index is still under development.

Hopefully this first one will be very easy.

You must be on Hounslow Heath, just about at the top of the climb out of Weindorfer's Forest.

I like this game! But I have a bit of a problem because all my photos appear to be more than 3mb and I don't know how to compress or make them smaller. So I will pass over to someone else to post a photo. Perhaps if you go again, walkintas, you might get someone this time who is a bit more computer literate to answer.

If you are running Windows XP, download a little thing called Image Resizer from the Microsoft site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/down ... rtoys.mspx
Once installed, it just becomes part of your Windows Explorer menu; right click on the image files you wish to resize, select "Image Resize", select the size you want and it's done.

If you are running Windows Vista, download VSO Image Resizer from here:
http://www.vso-software.fr/products/image_resizer/
Also works from your Windows Explorer menu. Right click the files etc....

BOTH bits of software are FREE.

Sorry I can't help if you are using some other platform.

Would have to be between Wombat Peak and Marion's Lookout, looking down at Lake Lilla wouldn't it?

I can't pick it, and I dunno where Mt Curly is, but I reckon it looks westish because of the white rocks, and I know Eggs has done a bit around the Tindalls so good luck!

I guess we will find out when swifty checks in again.

Mt Curly rises above Lake Curly and lies between the Denison Range and the Spires, north of Lake Gordon. I will probably never get there :( , but I like checking maps and looking at pretty pictures. :)

The clues I am working on are:
1) Lots of exposed white rock. This is not the purple conglomerate of the Tyndall / West Coast Range, but the white quartzite of Frenchman's Cap, the Arthur ranges and a huge swag of mountains running through the centre of Tasmania between those 2 extremes. You do get a touch of it in the lower parts of the West Coast Range and even in the Cradle Mountain area. I think Hanson's Peak is quartzite?

2) This mountain appears from a similar angle in the tomes of David Nobles endless (and wonderful) photo essays - on a trip through the Denison's & Spires. But the photo is not labelled.

3) Badger Flat is a recognised spot for setting up camp on this walk through. And the lie of the land seems to conform to the List map of that area.

I bet you're right - from a "Search Users Posts" to see where they've been,
viewtopic.php?p=14636#p14636
Swifty wrote:I went over the Denison's to Lake Curly in 1980. We too had a bit of trouble descending the spur down from Bonds Craig, especially near the bottom and ended up in thick banksia and eucalypt scrub. We camped for two nights on Badger Flat beyond the North Star, near a small creek. There was no track down from Bonds Craig at that time. I made a note that if ever I go back (which will be not too far away hopefully) to keep to the right on the way down the spur, the ridge bends to the north west and is clear going. Keeping in a straight line (as you are now aware) the ground steepens and scrub gets worse and worse. The problem is that you can't really see the lower parts of the ridge on the way down. We camped at Lake Malana on the way back - a very pretty place!

So my guess would be somewhere beyond the north star on Badger flat, but I reckon Eggs gets it, time will tell when Swifty announces. 1980 was a big clue, should have jumped on it sooner.

ooooh... that's sneaky! :-) Good idea though. I bet a lot of people will start using those tactics now. :-)

But a great game.

Is it the back of Mt. Roland?

Not sure how many are going to have a crack at this - but it will be fun even if only a few scratch each others backs.

I can see Ben Lomond plateau, Quamby Bluff, Mother Cummings Peak & Western Bluff on the sky line. But the photo is below the level of the ridge on the left. So my guess is that it is south of Mt Roland on the track to the top, maybe a kilometre back.

I reckon you will get the nod walkinTas
