Track Notes Writing Competition

Fri 26 Mar, 2010 11:42 am

Mark Kitto and 40 Degrees South (publishing) are proud to sponsor a competition that allows you to potentially share your love of the Tasmanian Wilderness with a large audience.

A new guide book is soon to be published for Tasmanian walks, and you are invited to submit a track notes article for a walk you have done in Tasmania to be included in the new book.

The competition rules are as follows:
  1. the article is not to exceed 500 words
  2. you must have completed the featured walk in the past 12 months
  3. must include two (2) photographs of the specific area
  4. must be submitted by the 1st of May 2010

A maximum of 20 articles submitted to this competition will be selected by the publisher to be included in the new book, possibly with other articles sourced from elsewhere. Each winning author who's article is published through this competition will receive 3 copies of the finished book (one to keep and two to give away). Winners will be announced and notified on the 4th of May.

All items that are published will be credited and acknowledged in the book, your first chance to be published. The publisher reserves the right to edit for length and style.

To enter this competition, email your article and photographs to: track_notes_competition@bushwalk.com

Sorry to be cynical, but some publishers are becoming increasingly good in recent years at avoiding having to pay writers and photographers. Sorry Nik, but I'm unimpressed you would promote something like this.

I really don't have time to put anything together for this as much as I'd like to.
Previous walk reports I have done can be found at the links below, tho they seem to be outside the submission criteria.
Please let me know if any of these are of interest to you & I may be able to edit them a little, tho as I say, my free time is a little light on at the moment.

Adamsons Peak, The Calf & Mesa - http://wildtiger.biz/?tracknotes&id=66

Mt Bobs - http://wildtiger.biz/index.php?tracknotes&id=62

Cheers.
Stuart.

sorry woka but the aim of the exercise is not to avoid paying anyone, but for people to be able to express their love for the tasmanian wilderness with a wide audience.

Hi Funky Bunch, I don't want to sound like I think this type of venture doesn't have any merit at all, if it was for a one off (or series of one off) magazine article(s) and the published authors recieved say a free subscription to the magazine, I don't think that would be unreasonable at all!

But for a co-author to receive three copies of a book they contribute to that could sell 30,000 copies in the first year.... I dunno, sounds like someone stands to make a tidy profit out of this - and that's just in the first year!! I don't doubt there are risks involved, but this type of book tends to sell quite well (most of my friends have a collection of bushwalking track guides on their book shelves, even the ones that aren't out there all the time).

If the goal is "for people to be able to express their love for the tasmanian wilderness with a wide audience", I guess some of the questions I would be asking are:
1/ Who is making a profit from this?
2/ Are other people or organisations contributing their time without payment or providing in-kind support?
3/ Will some of the net profit go to looking after the tasmanian wilderness we all love?
4/ Who owns the copyright to published articles?

Funky Bunch: I'm quite happy for you to convince that I'm wrong about this. Even if you do stand to make *some* profit, I don't necessarily think that's unreasonable, I just think you have the the balance wrong. Just my two cents worth.
