A lot of good stuff around the ACT needs to be on my to do list.

Good guess because it is Talaterang on the left from Mount Bushwalker. Normally you would be able to see The Castle and that area but it was covered in cloud.

I reckon I can pick out Colong, Cloudmaker and Guouogang - so looking at the toppo I reckon you are somewhere near hilltop.
Is that Mt Jellore in front?

Wrong part of the state, although only a few hours' drive away. Looking in the wrong direction. And at that the wrong national parks.

Yes, not a bad guess, I reckon. My guess was somewhere between Goondiwindi and the Murray River.

Thanks, so far I've only visited Didthul and Mt Bushwalker in the general region and had trouble reconciling the view.

NSW, something different:

None of those. Narrow Neck is geographically closest, but still about 70 km away (as the crow flies, much further by road).

I earlier thought of Cave Creek at Bargo, which would align with your clue? Haven't been there but have read about it (maybe in one of Sloss's guides?)
