Kanangra Walls to Kowmung via Gingra

Postby bushnut » Fri 07 Jun, 2019 1:57 pm

Hi Everyone,

Can any of you fine folk let me know the approximate time taken from Kanangra Walls to the Kowmung via Gingra. Not super fast and with a roughly 20kg pack.

I am thinking of doing a circuit: Walls, Kowmung via Gingra, Compagnoni Pass, Ti Willa Plateau, 100 man cave, Walls, over three days.

I want to know if I can drive from Sydney on the beginning of the first day or should I camp overnight at Boyd River.

Any advice is always appreciated.

Cheers

Hi BN
It all depends how fast you walk!
For an average walker this is a full day, more so on the way back,
and its winter so the days are short, so an early start is in order.
Boyd river is quite pleasant and sometimes you can lie awake listening to the dingos

It's a good track with mostly gentle downhill the whole way. About 6 hrs at an average pace I'd say... maybe a bit more if you spend time faffing around at Cottage Rock or the Coal Seam. The track is a little vague at one or two of the "tops" so maybe allow an extra half hour or so in case you lose it and need to backtrack. If you get to the carpark by 10 or so you should be fine.

The above advice is pretty solid. Once you find the right way off the Tops then it is a pretty cushy walk down to the river, even in failing light.

Hmm, the last few hundred metres can be a bit vague, depending on conditions. See if you can start walking a little before 10am if you're unfamiliar with the area.

It's a fabulous three day circuit, but the first day is the longest one.

Did this in three walking days last year. Got there late friday night, set off before 9 the next morning. Long but easyish day to the Kowmung and camp. Solid day to 100 Man Cave the next day with water carry. Great camp cave. Then big awesome day up to Cloudmaker and back to the walls and the car. We h\got hammered by the weather on the final day but it was the best three day walk I have done in years.

I reckon you would be pushing it, driving from Sydney and walking to the Kowmung via the Gingra Range before it got dark. If you don;t mind walking for an hour or two using a head lamp or are super fit and go really fast, you'll be OK. Otherwise, probably better to camp and get an early start.

About 6h at a moderate pace - but that was with a 12kg pack!!

We did it as a 2-day circuit - carrying about 5l of water and camping just below the pass as it got dark. Ideally we'd have camped either in the camp caves at the foot of the pass or on top where there are some nice cleared areas and reasonably good views.

Tom, I am sucker for creature comforts so I’ll try get it down to 18kgs ;)

Thanks everyone for your advice/thoughts.

Will likely drive and walk in one day - I have a good GPS (iPhone with motion-x gps and NSW topos. Better than many dedicated units IMHO!) so will be ok with nav at night.

It sounds like a really great circuit. Can’t wait.

Suspect so.

etopo / six maps...

I have the free (Android) Avenza and just upload, or delete and upload another topo as required. Have only dabbled a bit as I prefer paper map and compass!

Sure can! With Motion-x there is a place where you can enter in a URL which links to the NSW topo map. It downloads a copy so no need to update. Route planning is so much easier on a phone. One thing though: you need to drop a few waypoints to see that section of the map offline.

I used it at the very bottom of Mt Paralyser without loss of signal. Accuracy is very good. Apparently the chip set in an iPhone is excellent.

I always carry a battery pack as it usual only lasts a day - assuming heavy use.

Also other states have a URL which allows you to use their topo maps so can easily switch between.

Motion x costs about $20 when I bought a few years ago...

Recommended downloading the sixmaps etopos for use on phone. Which is a geopdf.

It's much higher resolution than saving the map data stream and makes viewing contours etc a breeze
