Has anyone explored the upper reaches of bulee brook and lower black range creek? Looks interesting on the topo. Wondering if the creek can be followed at creek level.

I had a little explore down Bulee and Bees Nest a few years back. Typical northern Budawangs- lots of beehive shaped cliffs, lots of route finding, patches of scrub, some very interesting pools and cascades.

The creeks were a mix of rocky/cliff fringed slots and flatter/forested gullies.

Overall, it is well worth an explore. When I was there a few years ago the area was a lot more scrubby that what it had been a decade or so earlier- according to my walking partner and font of all good bushwalking info and history.

With the recent fires now would be the ideal time to explore.

The area had a lot of aboriginal history- It was one of the last strongholds of the aboriginal population after white settlement.

Jim Sturgiss used to graze his cattle just south of that area.

There were some trip reports for Bulee Brook on Shoalhaven Bushwalkers website from memory.

I've spent a bit of time checking out the middle section of Bulee Brook, and there's lots to explore!!!


The two longest slots on the nth side of the creek go.
There is information on Back Range Creek and Picture Canyon in Ron Doughton's 'Bushwalking in the Budawangs'.
The notes in the book suggest taking a 20m climbing tape.
Right now is the perfect time to be exploring this area!

I lead a trip to Bulee Brook and Back Range Creek a year back, was good fun in the creeks but surrounding areas were a little scrubby. Some photos from others on the trip can be found below. As Melinda said, should be much easier now that the area has been burn through.

Thanks for the info Melinda. Thinking of doing some day trips or maybe camp out. Access in out should be a breeze atm after the fire. Paid a bit of notice at the vegetation driving past there today. Very open.

just back from a trip today from Sassafras went down about a km past the junction of back range and Bulee Brook, spectacular country, lots of pink flannel fkowers out a great swim at dog leg falls BUT the wattle regrowth on the ridge out from the powerline trai l for about a km and a bit is heavy going and I did spot a snake in amongst it. Hopefully you have been already. Also went in via Redgrounds through Galbraiths Yard Gap some fanstastic swimming/waterfalls But again at the gap on either side really thick with wattle for about 2kms

It's a nice area....

Dog leg falls? Does that refer to one of the cascades on back range ck (eg. the one under the "wave cave" just upstream from the confluence w/bulee brook)? Or somewhere i haven't been - can't find any reference to it on the topo (i know where dog leg cave is, but that's a fair way from that area)?

Dog Leg Falls is the one on Back Range Creek when you head down to the saddle between Bulee Brook and Back Range a small 2-3 tier waterfall stunning so about a km above the confluence and maybe 400m before Picture Canyon

if anyone goes out there... i lost a Keen sandle somewhere just before the wave cave on Bulee Brook I think, thanks

Ah yes thanks, I know the one. The banks of the pool at th bottom would make a nice campsite, although the nearby camping cave is better I guess
