Track down beside Valentine Falls KNP

Postby rcaffin » Wed 21 Apr, 2021 8:37 pm

There used to be a rough track down beside Valentine Falls going from Valentines Hut to Grey Mare Hut in KNP. Last time we did it it was a bit overgrown, but nothing serious. Um - that was some time ago.
Does anyone know whether it still 'works', or have the fires erased it?

Cheers

It does not still work :)

Its all but been consumed by the regrowth. It is still there underfoot but you need to wade through the waist high and sometimes neck high scrub.

Pre-fires it was definitely there, albeit faint in places, from the hut to below the falls. The fire regrowth has killed it I gather?

Hi Zap

Thanks.
Sigh. Well, it was always a bit of dodgy track.
Oh well, over the top on the FT then.
Cheers

Was there in March, returning from Grey Mare Hut, heading uphill to Valentines Hut via the Falls.
There are a few branches across the route, and the trail comes and goes, but in general if you're use to a little bit of scrub bashing, it's really not that bad, and you always have the creek as your handrail/guide.

Just wanted to add an update on this. I did the track uphill (ie coming from Grey Mare hut side and going up to Valentines Hut) a few days ago. It was quite awful, no track to speak of, waist+ height scrub, lots of regrowth, lots of old dead trees and it was wet, so everything was slippery especially the dead trees. It took a couple of hours for three of us to get up the hill to near the lookout, no sign of the track below that point. It wouldn't be quite as bad going downhill, or if it was dry, but I recommend not using this route until the track is re-established. Definitely Type 3 fun! Even the two necessary river crossings below the falls were pretty dodgy, with high levels.

Having said that, the falls are very pretty to see from below, so if you are keen then drop your pack, walk around and check them out, then go back to the main FT!

My mate and I camped at Valentines in late December. We took the Valentine Falls "track" from the hut towards the falls. The track comes and goes and there is a bit of trial and error and scrambling, with a lot of trees down and loose rocks.

We basically scrambled to a point where we couldn't go any further, then came back. I have no idea if we ended up in the right place to view the falls, but we had a nice view regardless. The walk/scramble to the falls and back took about an hour. It was a worthwhile side trip before leaving camp.
