KNP Draft management plan

Postby Lophophaps » Mon 28 Jun, 2021 4:45 pm

A Draft Amendment to the Kosciuszko National Park Plan of Management is being publicly exhibited until August 16, 2021.

This amendment would enable elements of the Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct Master Plan which are proposed within Kosciuszko National Park (‘the park’). Concurrently on exhibition, this Master Plan
https://www.planning.nsw.gov.au/Plans-f ... n-Precinct.
proposes increased visitation, improved public amenity, additional accommodation and other visitor facilities within the ski resorts and surrounding visitor nodes. The draft plan of management amendment seeks to enable these proposals, and additional accommodation in the northern area of the park, including Currango and Yarrangobilly.

Overall, the changes to the plan of management are proposed to enhance year-round activation of the park and support the snowsport industry, whilst ensuring the environmental values remain protected.

Key issues proposed in draft plan of management amendment include:
· Additional accommodation in the alpine resorts as well as at nearby visitor nodes. This will occur in conjunction with significant increases in off-park accommodation.
· New campground and cabin facilities at Thredbo Rangers Station, Island Bend, Guthega and Creel Bay.
· Additional accommodation at Yarrangobilly Caves, Currango and Kiandra with plans for those sites being co-exhibited. Note these areas are not within the Snowy Mountains SAP area.
· Allowing commercial tour operators limited vehicle access on the Summit Trail to provide a drop-off for multi-day walkers using the Snowies Iconic Walk
· Allowing commute-only helicopter trips to Thredbo, Charlotte Pass and Perisher under consent conditions
· Additional support for traditional owner aspirations
· Fulfilment of a plan of management requirement that proposals to increase bed number allocations can only be allowed after the carrying capacity of the resorts has been reviewed.
· A proposal to require resorts to develop an environmental management system certified to ISO14001 overseen by NPWS as a prerequisite to future development

The draft plan can be viewed at http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/get-i ... e-your-say or NPWS Offices in Jindabyne (46 Kosciuszko Road) or Tumut (4A Adelong Drive). The existing plan of management is located at http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/resea ... management. It is recommended that readers of the draft amendment do so in reference to the existing plan.
