The Great Escarpment Trail feedback

Postby BushwalkingNSWAdmin » Fri 11 Mar, 2022 11:27 am

Bushwalking NSW Inc. and Bushwalking Queensland Inc. are working to create a trail that links all the Gondwanan World Heritage rainforests from Barrington Tops in NSW (near Newcastle) to Boonah in south-east Queensland. We're calling it The Great Escarpment Trail. See more here: https://www.bushwalkingnsw.org.au/bushwalking/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/The-Great-Escarpment-Trail.pdf

What do you think of the Great Escarpment Trail?

Seems a bit strange that Bushwalking Peak bodies are promoting so called low impact activities, such as Mountain biking & Horse riding through World Heritage Gondwana Rainforests ? Weed & seed issues ?
Maybe it's worded wrongly, perhaps your sharing the trail with bikes & horses in already established sections ?

Details are pretty scarce. I'm picturing using existing walking tracks joined by fire trails & dirt back roads...does it use parts of the Bicentennial National Trail in places ? Resupply towns ?

Eventual Boonah - Ipswich Trail connection ? If/when they ever join the North & Southern sections together. Would only be a short thumb or taxi ride to a train station from the Northern end.

i do NOT agree that mountain biking and horse riding are anywhere near 'low impact'.
The MTBs have been banned from the Kosci loop track because they were decidedly high impact. And horse riding spreads weeds like mad.

Not a good idea.

Yes, I think we need a little more detailed info from the original poster...

You are correct ofuros, we were thinking of sharing the trail with bikes & horses in already established sections - particularly the fire trails. Which won't please the mountain bikers as they love single track. So I've edited the description to just refer to walking as that is what we are focusing our energies on. And I've yet to assess how a bike packer or horse rider could use appropriate parts of the route.

You are also correct that the trail uses existing walking tracks joined by fire trails & dirt back roads...and it uses the Bicentennial National Trail in one section.

It only passes close to 2 towns

And yes an eventual Boonah - Ipswich Trail connection is envisaged. I'll call on Gavin to provide more detail....
