Lake Tali Karng Via Wellington River

Postby HobieEm » Wed 29 Mar, 2023 3:23 pm

Hi all,
Walking in via Wellington River to Lake Tali Karni soon. Wanting to do the Riggall Spur track and loop around. A few questions.
Can you walk up to Snowden Falls at all around the Lake?
I understand you can not camp at the Lake but are there any good campsites just southwest of the lake heading to Barrier Creek on the Clive Lanigan Walking track?
Is it worth walking out over the Star Of Hope Saddle via the Mt Margaret Walking Track if we drop a car there on the way in?
Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

I can't remember any suitable campsites along CL Track through the Valley of Destruction. There was a small area at the top of Echo Point Track where it meets Riggall Spur Track and a nice campsite where Riggall Spur Track meets the Wellington River. Cant comment on Mt Margaret Track which I think was badly hit by the fires a couple of years ago.

Mt Margaret route never really recovered from the fires before the last ones. It's totally overgrown now. A pity, because it used to be a good way in - harder work than the other routes, but good country.

There used to be good campsite near the Riggalls turnoff; no idea if it's still there.

The Mount Margaret track to Lake TK is closed and probably lost to the wilderness unless BTAC recut it.
Yes you can walk around the lake to the waterfall that feeds Lake TK. It is a good lunch spot.
Many people camp up near the Riggals hut site ( Nyimba ) on the Wellington Plains. The Pit loo and water tank rebuild there has been nearly completed.

Hi all. Can anyone advise on the 13 or so river crossings on the Wellington River in 10 days, October 28? Walking from McFarlane Saddle via Lake Tali Karng and out to the Wellington River bridge. A bit concerned about all the river crossings after all this rain we have had.

IMHO The Wellington River route is best left until Autumn. Go in via Macfarlane Saddle and back out the same way .You can vary the route by visiting Mt. Wellington and Miller hut on the way in or on the way out.
